What is Literacy?

Literacy is the ability to read, write, listen and speak. It has been also paired with creativity, technology and viewing.Literacy is all around us,from the music we hear to the food labeles we read, and even the video games we play. If we are able to breakdown the idea, we are using literacy. The concept of literacy really took off in the 15th century, when paper was first utilized. From then on has literacy been heavily applied to everything. Practicing with books and other platforms can create adventures and knowdlege we thought we would never learn or discover.

X

Speaking is the sharing of knowdlege and information by language. Language is diverse. Writting and speech fall into speaking.Remember speaking is way more than just speech.

The definition of Nurturing is defined as caring and encouraging growth. Being the creative educator I am, I strive to allow freedom of artistic and creative abilities tailored to each student. I strive to create curiculums and agendas that have settings and themes that are easily recognizable and relatable to the students.I will focus on identtiy of the students to build background knowledge. Group activites will be in small groups (3-5 students) which will include activities and exercises. My goal is to limit my full input and control, and allow a classroom full of questions and curiosities. Langauge will be embraced with a wide spectrum of sources. Nothing will be left out as this world is diverse and growing. Providing a world where the students are familiar, I plan to care and encourage the growth of vocabulary and phonological awarness, decoding and advancement of sight words. From a standpoint of literacy I plan to respect and raise the main concept of comprehension.

Authenticity is my biggest harp in education. This assignment alone was created with the full intentions to break the simplisty of projects and create something new. I personally strive to create new opportunites for students to learn. My main focus is to adapt games, and mystery practices and all around platform usage to have everyone being their own detective to dycypher the curriculum. I plan to create lessons that parents are easily able to dive right into to assist their children and everyone who aids to better help the students with assignments.

What kind of Authenticcompositional activities will you give your students?

Viewing,is also known as visual literacy. The importance goes a tremendous way, from the depiction of what we read, see or deconstruct it is how way bases our thoughts and ideas off of. Communication is increased by conveying ideas and messages. We can enterpret cultural understanding and perspectives from visual imagery and our over all viewing. Though this is regarded as what we see, the idea of viewing is also how we perceive. Digging deep into both meanings helps understand more clearly.

Despite the many comprehension skills I have learned in RAL320 and schooling, there are 4 that stand out the most. Background knowldege, infering, decoding and questioning. These skills are a fantastic way to become an advanced student, the idea of being your own detective and teacher shows the student to think outside the box. Being allowed to solve and interpret independently or in a small group empowers the student to be self reliant and strong willed. This alone seperates the idea that the teacher is an enforcer rather than a coach. This tool witll transfer a great deal towards the future. Educators overly control free thinking, my goal would be to unleash the free minded learners all students desperatly want to be.

Listening is more than hearing. Listening is the concept of feeling, and understanding, it is understanding what the writer or narrator conveys by words and gestures.Listening skills are very important since we should all be aware of what the author is telling us.

Reading is not natural, our brains are not hard wired for reading. What we do know is reading is fundemental, it increases knowldege, creativty and vocabulary expansion. Though its not natural, it can be learned with hard work and repitition. There are multiple forms of reading and learning types,to help you succeed.

How will you honor student choice/agency in your literacy classroom?

Choice is a pinaccle concept when creating a well balanced setting for learning. Not all students learn the same way, so the idea of creating mulitple comprehensive assignments that enable the maximum outcome is a great concept to work behind. Being multimodal and diverse with the creation of these assignmetns will then enable engagment and motivation. Allowing students to choose boosts grades which also capatilizes on their own specific strengths.

How will literacy in your classroom systematically work against racism?

Being a latin male from an under privileged household, I know all about the biases and racism many people face in todays generation. I pride myself in being an advocate for the people who lost their voice. From a standpoint of literacy, I strive to incorporate literature that is from all walks of life. This includes education within culuture and religion. There will be no limitations with tactics and paths to unite our students and educators within one another. Morning meetings and assignments that spark one on one student engagement is a start to disseminate the taught issues of racism. Regardless of race and background all students will be treated equal and given the nuture and care they deserve.
