About

Benita Mulimilwa

-Cinderella Stories: Female protagonists from poor backgrounds who fall in love with wealthy men. - Drama and Intrigue: Themes like murder, incest, and adultery. - Emotional Intensity: Telenovelas evoke and protray strong emotions

A subgenre of narcotelenovelas, which focus on drug traffickingNarco-culture is a phenomenon derived from several Latin American countries which reveals a pattern of behavior associated with drug traffickers. This includes the various visual and linguistic representations about drug traffickers and the cultural universe of growing, processing, distributing, and consuming illegal drugs (Cabañas 2014). They are charaterized by disregard for life, flirting with death, ostentatious displays of money, extravagant desires, and certain musical styles like the Mexican narco ballad or funk from the Brazilian slums. They reveal some of the codes of conduct, lifestyles, and narco-culture interrelations prevalent throughout this subculture

Telenovelas allow us to discover Latin culture in many different waysTelenovelas often depict local customs, traditions, and social dynamics specific to the regions where they are produced. Viewers see familiar landscapes, hear their native language, and witness relatable situations. Telenovelas mirror societal issues. They tackle themes like class disparities, family dynamics, and gender roles. By portraying diverse characters and relationships, telenovelas contribute to discussions about identity, love, and acceptance. Telenovela characters often set fashion trends. Their clothing, hairstyles, and accessories become iconic. Viewers emulate their favorite stars, contributing to broader fashion movements.

4 Significado Cultural

“For us Latinas, telenovelas are more than just our guilty pleasure. They're a reflection of our lives, our hopes, our dreams, and yes, sometimes even our over-the-top family drama. They've played a crucial role in shaping Latino culture and identities, offering representation on screen in an industry where we've often been marginalized.’’

Q1: I think that telenovelas allow us to discover Latin culture in many different ways, such as through music. Telespectators are able to listen to and appreciate or not the sounds of the country making the Soap. Telenovelas convey traditions and values linked to the country they come from, and give an image of Latin society.

Q2: I grew up watching telenovelas, and I knew that most of the ones I watched came from Mexico. Thanks to them, I discovered what was a mariachie serenade or quincenira. I realized that values such as honesty and hard work are deeply rooted in Mexican society. Some of them illustrate the problems of the social classes which are the same as in my home country. By watching them; I got to ubderstand that a majority of them portray everyday life.

Q3: Some of the Telenovelas illustrate the struggles of some social classes which are the same as in my home country (The Democratic Republic of Congo). The disadvantages of the middle and lower classes lead some people to act badly in order to earn money or gain notoriety, which, for example, leads to a high rate of corruption in DRC.

Mariachi

''Mariachi, small Mexican musical ensemble composed of a variety of mostly stringed instruments. In addition to referring to an ensemble, the term mariachi is also used for the individual performer of mariachi music or for the music itself. Mariachi has long been considered a uniquely Mexican sound, representing a homegrown tradition that embraces both indigenous and foreign elements.''(The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica)

El Clon or O Clone is the brazilien soap opera (novela). The soap is based on the love that two individuals of different religions have for each other. They meet by matter of destiny to fall deeply in love with each other, both being single at the time.Their love had to remain a secret as in Muslim countries a woman could not come in contact with another man outside her home as she would be whipped in public resulting sometimes in death. Jade confides in Zoraide and tells her all about it. However one day, Jade's uncle, Siri Ali decides that Jade should get married- not with the love of her life but with someone he chose, SAID. One day they decide to flee to get married in Brazil.

"One of Mexico’s most popular telenovelas, Maria La Del Barrio might remind some of My Fair Lady. Maria, who comes from a humble background, suddenly finds herself living in the De La Vega’s house, one of the wealthiest families in Mexico. There she falls in love with Luis Fernando, the eldest son of the De la Vega family, but their love story turns into one tormented relationship because many women fight Maria for Luis Fernando’s heart." Serenatas were a type of song originally written to honor someone's special occasion, such as their birthday, often for individuals of royal status
In Mexican culture you can use serenades in many different ways. There are serenades meant to celebrate birthday parties, serenades for Mother's Day celebrations.

In most of Latin America, especially in Mexico, bringing a mariachi serenade to the woman you love and singing love songs outside her window is considered one of the most romantic gestures a man can make.
