Not all paper products are acceptable. Paper towels, napkins, and kleenix do not have enough fiber to be adequately recycled. Acceptable items for mixed paper recycling are: Writing paper, Notebooks, Stationery, Newspaper, Magazines, Catalogs, Phone books, Paperboard boxes (cereal, pasta, baking mixes), White office paper, Receipts, Envelopes, Packing and shipping cardboard boxes, Pizza boxes (clean, dry, no food residue), Frozen food boxes, Paperboard takeout food containers, Over-the-counter medicine boxes, Candy boxes, Paper padded mailers. All items need to be clean and dry. For more information, visit the American Forest & Paper Association's site for recycling paper: https://www.afandpa.org/whats-recyclable

Mixed paper constitutes the largest portion of municipal solid waste (MSW). Because it is the largest portion of the waste stream, mixed paper also offers the best opportunity for recycling. Shredded paper is an acceptable mixed paper type, right? Not necessarily, it depends on how the paper has been shredded. Some domestic shredders can make the fibres too weak for recycling. If you're recycling paper you've shredded yourself (rather than using a shredding company), check with your local council whether you can put it in your paper recycling bin. Composting paper products does not use any energy, very little water, and produces zero waste. As an added bonus, the carbon in paper is actually beneficial to the compost that is eventually produced. Adding paper to compost contributes to the ‘brown’ material, which should ideally make up about half of what goes into your compost pile, to make the breakdown process as fast as possible and ensure you end up with a good nutrient balance for your garden. There are five basic paper grade categories:

  • Old Corrugated Containers (OCC), also known as corrugated cardboard
  • Mixed paper: Mixed paper is a broad category that often includes items such as discarded mail, telephone books, paperboard, magazines, and catalogs.
  • Old Newspapers(ONP): Mills primarily use old newspapers to make new recycled-content newsprint and in recycled paperboard and tissue, among other paper grades.
  • High Grade Deinked Paper: This grade is made of high grade paper such as letterhead, copier paper, envelopes, and printer and convertor scrap that has gone through the printing process.
  • Pulp substitutes: A high grade paper, pulp substitutes are often shavings and clippings from converting operations at paper mills and print shops. Mills can use pulp substitutes in place of virgin materials to make back into high grade paper products.
Statistics from the American Forest & Paper Association on the recovery of paper and paperboard, including information specific to individual grades, is available at Paper Recycles.org
