Frostbite happens when skin and tissues start to freeze. This usually happens first in fingers, toes, ears and the nose. Symptoms of this feel like cold skin, a prickling sensation which leads to numbness, waxy skin or blisters. In worst cases it can cause the skin to turn black which means it is dying and will need to be removed. How do you prevent this? Wearing good clothes that trap heat and cover extremities is important, staying dry and avoiding long exposure to the elements is important to prevent this. If occurs immediately rewarm.
Hypothermia is a bit more severe then frostbite and can be life threatening. This occurs when the body loses more heat then it can produce which can lead to very low body temperatures. Signs of this include, shivering, slurred speech, clumsiness, fatigue and even confusion. How do you prevent this? Layered clothes that keep wind and moisture out and if possible seek shelter if having any of these symptoms.
Other cold related illness' could be trench foot which is a common one and chillblains. Trench foot occurs due to long expsure to the wet and cold environment which can cause blisters and ulcers on the feet.Chillblains can occur from exposure to cold (non freezing) temperatures and can lead to redness, itching anf inflammation. Risk factors of this could be wet conditions, poor circulation and wearing clothes that aren't appropriate. How do you prevent these? Dressing in layers to trap body heat and keeping extremities covered, staying dry because moisture causes heat loss and staying in shelter if having any symptoms.
