The Legend of Wars and Sawa

Long time ago Poland was covered with forests, full of wild animals, and people lived in villages. In one of them at a river side there lived a young fisherman, Wars. He had luck so he always came back home with a full fishnet. Wars was most interested in night fishing. He was very hard-working and he was patiently tying fishnet. He loved bird singing and moonlight. One night, when Wars was there he threw his fishnet and he saw a beautiful creature in the river. He fell in love in one second. Every night he came to the same place to observe this creature. It turned out she was a mermaid. Every night he went to listen to her voice and look at her. Until one time he pushed his head out too much and she saw him. She approached him and angrily said to him: "Why are you looking at me?" - "Because the first time I heard you sing, I fell in love." - "I love you too… But we are so different!" - "What can we do?" Sawa knew the legend of what happened when the mermaid fell in love with a man…

Wars and Sawa: a Story of Love and Transformation

Near the shore, other fishermen witnessed the scene and decided to attack the mermaid, who hid in the depths and disappeared. The fishermen chased Wars back to his home and burnt it down, forcing Wars to flee into the river waters. He leaped from a big stone with a mighty dive and cried out Sawa's name. Sawa helped him and with just one kiss, Wars was transformed into a Triton. They lived happily forever in the river that flew through their city: WarSawe

Mitì, a fisherman’s daughter, lived in a village on the coast near Ancona, and she was the most beautiful girl of all. She spent her time looking at the sea and singing, waiting for someone to arrive. Once she had a weird dream: she dreamt about a young man on a small boat, and when he arrived on the shore he asked her to marry him and to leave her village with him. She was amazed by this dream and could not forget it. She spent her days on the beach waiting for the boy. One night, finally, Mitì recognised the boat and the young man on it arriving on the shore. He was a sailor, tall and handsome, with beautiful dark hair. She started to run to give him a hug but…

You see, the authorities were offering a high reward to anyone who would catch him! So the old lady thought : "This is my chance to become rich!" Juraj had hurt his head and lost consciousness. With no time to spare, the old lady wrapped him up with rope so tight he could not release himself. But the old lady, who was also the owner of the pub had a young, very beautiful and kind-hearted daughter named Aurora, who was in favour of Juraj and his comrades, because she admired them for helping the poor. So she poured some sleeping potion into her mother's glass of water and as soon as the old lady drank it, she fell asleep. Aurora quickly cut the rope with a sharp knife and together they fled into the forest. They fell in love, got married and they had seven children, three girls and four boys, who later saved their people and created a community whose members were the most hospitable and friendly people that always fought for justice and peace.

Juraj Jánošík fell down because of the peas and the authorities arrested him and got him in the jail. Then he had to stand in front of the judges. They offered to let him live if he revealed the names of his men but he refused. And the judges announced the sentence to dead. The execution was carried out by hanging on the hook. The legend says that when he stood under the hook, he said: "If you have baked me so you should eat me!" And he jumped up on the hook. The loot of these bandits is said to be hidden all over Slovakia.

The legend of the princess and the strange little church on the island of Chios

A long time ago on Chios, there was a small village which was called Agio Galas. It’s been said that there was a very beautiful but unlucky princess living there. She was suffering from Hansen’s disease and that was the reason that her father sent her away from home. The poor girl asked for help from an old lady who took her in her house. She cared for her like she was her own mother. One night the old lady had a dream about the girl. She told her that she should go to a cave nearby and drink water from its spring to get well.

...finding the Spring

The Princess liked the old lady very much and therefore she followed her advice and she went to the cave. It wasn't easy to find the cave and the princess was very sick. After some days she found the cave and the spring and although she was very weak, she drank from the spring and fell unconscious. When she woke up, she found herself lying on the rock. The princess was indeed healed. She was very happy. However, she was sorry that she did not know where the spring was, because there were many sick people in the country. Her father looked forward to her daughter and had a church built in the place where she woke up. She prayed for so long in that small church to find the spring again that she finally turned herself into a spring. Whoever drank it, was cured of all diseases.

The Story of Azzurrina

In the castle of Montebello, near Rimini, born in around 1370, there was a girl called Guendalina Malatesta. She was a child raised in a noble family, however she was albino. She was pale, with blonde hair and big eyes. Given the beliefs of the time it was thought that albino people were of a diabolical nature, for this reason her mother had to dye her hair, but then she had lilac reflections. For this reason her name became Azzurrina. One day while she was playing with a ball in the corridor of her castle, she fell down from the stairs...

...and fainted. While she was unconscious one of the maids in the house tried to help her but to no avail. So she brought a bucket of water and threw it onto the girl! Azzurrina regained consciousness but her maid was in shock! Azzurrina's hair had become white! Soon the news spread around the town. The girl's mother took the girl and they rode off to a faraway monastery. She kissed her daughter's forehead and said "goodbye" to her, never to see her again. Before that though she made her promise that she would never get into contact with people outside the monastery. One day a few years later, she heard a young boy crying and helplessly asking them to open the gate. The little boy who was ten years old had gone lost into the forest while picking berries and as it had started getting dark, he got scared and tried to find a shelter. Azzurrina took him inside, offered to him food, fresh water and warm clothes, told him a bed time story to confront him and the boy fell asleep in her arms.

The next morning she decided to help the boy find his parents. So they rode off on her horse into the center of the town without sparing a thought of the risk she was putting her life at. Soon she found the boy's parents who worked in the local free market selling flowers; as soon as they saw her approaching them holding their kid's hand, they shouted at her ''you bad witch, so you are the one who has abducted our kid. Leave him alone. Guards, catch this white demon.'' The child burst into tears, refusing to let her go, mumbling : ''Don't talk to her like that, she saved my life''. The other residents had already taken their axes and tried to attack her. Suddenly a shield of human bodies, to be accurate, a shield of kids' bodies, formed a circle around her shouting : ''She is not a white demon, she is a white angel''. Apparently, she had helped a lot of kids through the years, who had been lost in the forest. The residents put down their axes in amazement. For the first time in their lives, they listened to the innocent ones. From then on the residents tried to involve Azzurrina and her family in their community. The kids that were saved by Azzurrina, every year, when the first snowflakes fall, dance their hearts out to honour her.

A scream was heard, but only one guard heard it, who was right in front of the cold room, so after hearing it he called the other guards. When the guards went to see what had happened they didn't see anyone except a piece of cloth; only at a certain point they heard laughter, when they turned they saw Gwendalina's ghost who was looking at them with a very fearful and scary expression.. but then she disappeared.. the guards claimed they hadn't heard anything.

In an instant she found herself in a dark place, until a man opened the door, he was a policeman, and he wore glasses and he had black hair, he was dressed in blue, the first thing the policeman asked Azzurrina was: who are your parents? Azzurrina, a little confused, replied, so the man looked for them in old documents, until he remained without speaking: Azzurrina's parents died more than 500 years ago!

So the policeman asked Azzurrina what year it was, she replied: June 21, 1375. The policeman thought she was making all this up, since it was the year 2000! So the policeman checked the most recent cases of disappearances of girls, they were all aged 13 and up, but Azzurrina was around 5 years old, until he found this in an old document:"Today 21st June 1375 the traces of Gwendalina have been lost, also known as Azzurrina, who lived in Montebello." The policeman now seemed really intrigued, and the case became famous, and took the name of the "Little Traveler of Montebello". However the little traveler vanished again. The policeman thought she might have gone back to 1375. No trace remained of her and she was never found again. Today her ghost haunts the castle's basement and during the nights of the summer solstice, every five years, if you go to Montebello you can still hear her cries and moans.
