Cognitive Development
Overview
Cognitive development can be defined by how someone learns how to understand the world around them. There were two different theorist involved in cognitive developement.
Piaget Vs. Vygotsky
Vygotsky's theory of cognitive developement emphasizes the role that social interaction and culture has on a child’s developement ranther than the child's learning levels. His theory suggest that social interaction directly promotes development and that it happens on two steps. The first level developement occurs on is the social level then the second is on the indidual level.
Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that people go through four different stages of learning. The four different stages are sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. Everyone goes through these stages in the same order but at different rates depending on their experiences.
Interesting facts
1) Cognitive delevlopment begins at birth 2) During the sensorimotor stage in Piaget's theory, babies depend on their senses to learn. 3) Vygotsky believed thought and language do not merge until around the age of three due to speech developing through social interactions.
