Sustainability Strategy

In Nobre factory (Portugal), all cellulosic casing waste is sorted, collected and sent to an external partner for its composting. From this composting process they get fertilizers.

We, as consumers, are key enablers to achieve a more sustainable planet. Correct waste sorting is mandatory to help all the supply chain to recycle and revalorize all packaging waste generated at home. Waste sorting is locally defined so be sure you’re aware of how the waste is managed in your country, region or city and help us to make a better planet.

Quality & Environment team is working on the “0 WASTE” program that will ensure all waste generated in our factories is recycled or revalorized.

At Sigma Europe we have defined a target of minimum 30% of recycled content in average on our packaging materials by 2030. For example, our pizza’s packaging are produced with 80% of recycled material.

There are some natural packaging materials under study to be used in our products. The main challenge today is the barrier properties needed to guarantee the shelf life of our products.

Our main customers have already launched their own sustainable guidelines where they define their goals on recyclable materials, plastic reduction and recycled content for their own brand product. In some of our factories we produce products for their own brand.

SPG group packaging supplier uses the recycled plastic coming from our pizza bottom tray to add it back to the production of our packaging materials delivered to Ólvega factory. This process is certified by the RETRAY certification.

Ólvega factory is RETRAY PROCESS certified guaranteeing that our PET based packaging waste is sorted, collected and widely recycled.

Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 of recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foods is the one defining the recycled materials and recycling processes allowed to be used in our food contact materials. Unfortunately today there is only one plastic material (PET) and one recycling process (mechanical recycling) allowed to be used. Rest of recycles and processes need to be assessed by EFSA (European Food Safety association) and authorized by the commission. This makes much more difficult to find recycled materials solutions applicable to our packaging material and as a consequence, the availability of accepted recycles is low and prices are high, impacting directly to our business.

Our colleagues in Sigma México are working on a cellulosic waste revalorization study. Some first outputs confirmed that this waste may be used for animal feeding or as a biomass to get energy.

In Spain, the new Royal decree of packaging and packaging waste has fixed some reusing targets for the coming years for all FMCG companies, especially for beverages.

There are some closing loop wooden and plastic pallet management contracts and we used them in Sigma with some of our customers. More know ones are LPR and CHEP. Those companies ensure that all pallets are collected, cleaned and/or repaired and ready to be used back in the production process.

Recycled plastic waste not allowed to be in contact with food are widely used in other applications like plastic pallets, cars pieces, construction materials or urban furniture.
