1.1 Explain

Not recycling has a significant impact on the environment. When materials like plastic, paper, and glass are not recycled, they often end up in landfills where they take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose. This leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. Additionally, the production of new materials from raw resources depletes natural habitats, leading to deforestation, habitat destruction, and loss of biodiversity.

01. Issues

Using a large amount of energy can have significant negative effects on the environment. Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas to generate electricity releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. Additionally, the extraction and transportation of these fuels can result in air and water pollution, habitat destruction, and other environmental impacts.

1.2 Choices

We have chosen this problem because recycling is low in our homes and we believe that if we do not separate our waste correctly we are not taking care of our small part of the world in the way we should.

01. Issues

We have a project between English and physics to reduce the consumption of electricity, so we need to reduce this consumption.

Our initial footprint

01. Issues

Matias's carbon footprint

Álvaro's carbon footprint

02

Goals

Our goals

02. Goals

  • Try to put each type of waste in ther apropiate bin
  • Reduce our amount of energy consuption in 40 Kwh (Álvaro)
20 Kwh (Matias)

03

Actions

02

STEP

STEP

Buy containers for each waste

Knowing what type of waste each material is and teach our families

03. Actions

04

STEP

STEP

Switch off each and every appliance that is not in use in the home.

Turn off lights in the house that are not in use.

04

Progress

Alvaro managed to reduce his consumption by 60 kWh.

04. Progress

Step 5 would be to buy the bins and recycle but it has not been possible to do so.

We were able to get our relatives to differentiate between different types of waste but due to lack of time we were not able to recycle properly.

#4

We both make our families aware of the need to reduce energy consumption.

#2

Matias managed to reduce his consumption by 20 kWh

05. Reflection

Having planned the whole project, discovered our weaknesses and made a plan to address them, we set about the process. Due to the time we had in class we were not able to take into account the whole plan but we still learned. We learned that there are many things we do that we didn't know before that affect the environment: - Excessive use of energy. - Not recycling - Using too much water These are things that affect the environment, in different ways but attacking nature.

Reflection

This project has encouraged us to respect nature, the environment and animals. Using too much energy will no longer be a problem for us or at least we will try to do so. We will also try to dispose of the rubbish in the right place because if we don't recycle it, we can throw away things that could be used and thus have to make them again, wasting raw materials and emitting carbon.
