Literal translation, also known as word-for-word translation, is a technique where each word in the source text is translated directly into its equivalent in the target language, without considering the context, idiomatic expressions, or cultural nuances.

  • "I am walking on air."
Literal translation to Spanish: "Estoy caminando sobre aire." However, students have to be careful because Literal translation cannot be used in all cases. E.g. "It's raining cats and dogs." Lietral translation: Está lloviendo perros y gatos. Correct translation: Está lloviendo a cantaros.

Linguistic loans, are terms or expressions borrowed from one language and incorporated into another language. These borrowed words often retain their original form and meaning but become integrated into the vocabulary and usage of the borrowing language. Linguistic loans can occur for various reasons, such as cultural exchange, technological advancements, or historical interactions between language communities. Examples:

  • English: "computer"
  • Spanish: "computadora"
  • English: "internet"
  • Spanish: "internet"
  • English: "marketing"
  • Spanish: "marketing"

This technique is usually used when something specific culturally in one language occurs, and the translator cannot find its equivalent in the target culture. By using this technique, the translator replaces ST cultural element with one from the target culture. This may include replacing culturally specific references with equivalents that are more familiar to the target audience, adjusting humor or wordplay to maintain the intended effect, or altering dialogue to reflect natural speech patterns in the target language.

  • Keep your eyes peeled = Mantén los ojos bien abiertos
  • Let's hit the road! = ¡Pongámonos en marcha!
  • That's the last straw! = ¡Eso es el colmo!"
The difference between adaptation and modulation is that the former seeks a similar meaning in the target language due to a lack of equivalence. Whereas the latter maintains the same idea in the ST using other words.
