Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit on 21 December 1988
the Boeing 747 exploded, it killed all 259 passengers and crew on board and 11 people on the ground
The explosion ocurred 38 minutes after the take-off
The bombing remains the UK's worst terrorist attack
Pan Am Flight 103
Lockerbie Disaster
Following a three-year joint investigation arrest warrants were issued for two Libyan nationals
On November 13, 1991, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence agent and head of security for the Libyan Arab Airlines (LAA), and Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, the station manager at Luqa airport in Malta, are charged.
The explosion in hold 1, below the cabin, caused the entire front part of the aircraft, the cockpit, to completely detach from the rest, causing it to fall in free flight for two minutes before hitting the ground.
Winds of 100 knots left victims and wreckage along a 130 km corridor
Did the Pan Am pilots survive?
The force from the crash tore through the fuselage of the Pan Am plane and both aircraft exploded into flames. All passengers and crew members aboard the KLM plane were killed. But more than 60, survived the impact and fire.
An investigation commission was in charge of analyzing the scene of the accident and soon became convinced that the accident had been caused by a bomb. Later it would be known that, in fact, some 400 grams of explosive plastic hidden in a radio cassette were the cause of the tragedy. The radio was in a suitcase that exploded just below the cabin of the plane and caused it to fracture.
A service has taken place in southern Scotland to remember the victims of the Lockerbie bombing 30 years on.
