Modal verbs

Conditionals

Modal verbs

Before we start using them, you should know...

Specific functions when they are used:

Modal verbs are a special class of auxiliary verbs.

"May" expresses possibility or permission.

Express different moods or modalities.

They do not have a clear lexical meaning on their own.

"Should" expresses obligation or recommendation.

Are used to indicate the likelihood, possibility, ability, permission, obligation or necessity of an action or event.

"Must" expresses necessity or strong obligation.

Most common are "may", "might", "can", "could", "should", "must", "will", and "would".

May, Might, Can

For example, "I may go to the park later if I finish my homework." This suggests there is a possibility the person will go to the park, but it is not certain. "May" can also be used to ask for permission, such as "May I borrow your pencil?"

The modal verb "may" expresses possibility or permission.

For instance, "I might study for the test tonight." This implies there is some chance the person will study, but they are less sure about it compared to using "may." "Might" can also be used to make polite requests, as in "Might I ask you a question?"

The modal verb "might" is similar to "may" in that it expresses possibility, but with a slightly lower degree of certainty.

For example, "I can speak Spanish" means the person has the ability to speak Spanish. "Can" is also used to ask for permission, like "Can I use your phone?" Additionally, "can" can indicate possibility, as in "You can find the answer in the book."

"Can" is a modal verb that expresses ability or possibility.

Could, Should, Must

The modal verb "could" expresses ability or possibility, similar to "can". "Can" indicates a present ability, while "could" suggests a past or hypothetical ability.

For instance, "I can speak three languages" means I have the current ability, whereas "I could speak three languages when I was younger" refers to a past ability.

"Should" and "must" express obligation or necessity. "Should" suggests a recommendation or strong advice, while "must" indicates a requirement or necessity.

For example, "You should study more to improve your grades" is a piece of advice, whereas "You must submit your assignment by Friday" is an obligation.

Conditionals

there are 5 different types but...

We will focus only on two of them

WHAT ARE CONDITIONALS?

  • Are a grammatical structure in English that allow us to describe the outcome of a situation based on a given condition.
They help us explore hypothetical scenarios, make predictions, and discuss possibilities.
  • Conditionals use the word "if" to set up the condition, and then describe the potential result or consequence. .

Bender is known for being prejudiced against non-robots. For example, one of his signature expressions is "kill all humans". Those who are not subject to Bender's prejudicial attitude are documented on his "Do Not Kill" list, which includes only his best friend Philip J. Fry and his colleague Hermes Conrad.
