The Natural Approach
The Silent Way
Total Physical Response
1.
The Silent Way
The SW is the name of a method of language teaching devised by Caleb Gattengo in the 1960. It is based on the idea that teachers should be as silent as possible during a class, but learners should be encouraged to speak as much as possible.
It emphasizes the role of the teacher as a facilitator and encourages learners to discover language rules and patterns on their own.
2. The Total Physical Response
TPR was developed by James Asher in the 1960s, as a result of his experiences observing young children learning their first language.
It is based on the idea that language learning is facilitated through physical movement and coordination, mimicking the way children acquire their first language.
3. The Natural Approach
The Natural Approach was developed by Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell in the 1970s and 1980s.
It is based on the principles of natural language acquisition, emphasizing exposure to comprehensible input and the development of communicative competence.
