Introduction

Edinburgh is a city in the UK located in Scotland, of wich it's the capital. It's situated on the east coast, near the Firth of Forth, and it's build on seven hills; the main hills are Calton Hill and Braid Hills, but the most elevated point of the city is Arthur's Seat. It's divided into Old Town and New Town; the most beautiful places to visit are the Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Arthur's Seat, the National Museum of Scotland and Royal Mile. Every year is celebrated the Edinburgh festival.

The Old Town

The Old Town is the most visited area in Edinburgh. In the centre, built on an excint volcano, there's the Edinburgh Castle. This part of the city is so rich in monuments and places to visit that is also home to Holyrood Palace, Royal Mile and to the Scottish Parlament.

The New Town

Even if the New Town isn't visited as musch as the Old Town it's indeed an elegant and modern area with its Georgian-style houses. It also hosts the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in neo-gothic style, where are exposed paintings of famous scottish painters of past and present.

Calton Hill

Calton Hill is a mix of commercial and residential areas. This portion of the city is very calm and it also hosts many cultural centres like the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and it's the location of the National Monument of Scotland. There are amusement centres too and on Broughton Street there are many cafes and shops.

Braid Hills

Braid Hills create an area stretching across the whole part of the south-west of Edinburgh. The few houses present are almost all terraced and very rural. The portion is famous for the golf course and the amazing view.

The Edinburgh Castle

The Edinburgh Castle was built 400 years ago on one of the most elevated points of the city. The castle has always been a military fortress but now it's also the location of the museums of the Royals Scots. The building has been opened to the public in 1819th by George IV.

Holyrood Palace

Holyrood Palace at first was a monastery created at the behest of David I of Scotland in 1128th; just in 1500th became the residence of the scottish sovereigns. The palace is build at the end of Royal Mile.

Arthur's Seat

Arthur's Seat is the most elevated point of the city and it's near to Holyrood Palace. It dominates Edinburgh being 251 metres high. The name probably derives from King Arthur.

The National Museum of Scotland

The National Museum of Scotland is a museum wich contains findings about scottish history and culture. It was formed in 2006th with the merger of the Museum of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Museum. It has international collections about science, technology, nature history and world cultures.

Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is a set of roads that form the main vein of the historic city centre running through the most significative buildings of the scottish history: Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. It's the most visited tourist road in the Old Town and when there's the Edinburgh Festival it fills up with tourists and street performers.

Edinburgh Festival

The Edinburgh Festival it's an artistic festival that is celebrated the last three weeks of august. Not only street performers but also top artists perform; the first editio of the festival was in 1947th with the intention of boosting the morale of the people after the end of the Second World War.
