Solar panels

Although Europe receives little sunlight, rotating solar panels would be one of the colony's energy sources, along with nuclear fusion and the use of geothermal heat, coming from the satellite's ocean.

This angle can increase or decrease for a better eficiency

Nuclear fusion

Nuclear fusion

Besides energy, the helium (as a result of the nuclear fusion) would also be used as a fuel for rovers and other machines.

Geodynamics

Due to elliptical orbit of the satellite around Jupiter and thus variations in the gravitational forces between the bodies, tidal forces arise and produce frictional heating in the satellite's interior. Such process leads to the deformation of the moon that varies over the course of its orbit.

Geotermal energy in Europa

If Europa's rocky ocean floor is heated by tidal flexing, this process could potentially provide energy in the form of chemical nutrients available at hydrothermal vents. We know this type of process is possible because we see something similar in hydrothermal vents on Earth. In the ridges, cientists believe there is energy transfer from Europa's core. This energy would be used in the geothermal energy plant.

Waste Recycling

  • Sanitary waste would be used as fertilizer for the greenhouse.
  • Water from baths, toilets, etc. would go through a filtering process to be used again

Composition

  • Silicate rock Mantle
  • Ice-water crust
  • A probable iron-nickel core
  • Under the ice layer (of 15-25km) lies an ocean

Magnetic field is being created (induced) inside Europa by a deep layer of some electrically conductive fluid below the surface. Based on Europa's icy composition, scientists think the most likely material to create this magnetic signature is a global saltwater ocean.

General data

  • Gravity: 1,315 m/s2
  • Equatorial diameter: 3100 km - cerca de 90% do tamanho da Lua
  • Distance to Earth : 628 300 000 km
  • Distance to Jupiter : 670, 9 km
  • Temperature : -223°C to -108°C

Life in Europa?

Life requires 3 main things : liquide water; certain chemical elements and an enegy source.

  • Water : cientists believe in the existence of a liquid ocean, below the icy crust of Europa
  • Chemistry: elements as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur may be located within Europa's icy shell. Other elements may originate from Europa's core.
  • Energy: Europa's surface is hit by radiation from Jupiter. So life on the surface could not survive. But radiation can create fuel for life in a subsurface ocean.

Source : NASA

Radiation separates water molecules, the hydrogen floats and much of the oxygen stays behind and can bond with other elements.
