We're All Shipwrecked

Centuries ago, a shipwreck meant almost certain death to all on board. There were no lifeboats or helicopters to save people in distress. Even if the wreck occured within sight of shore, the passengers and crew had little hope of survival.

In 1789, a ship called the Adventure was stranded in a violent storm only 300 yards from shore near Newcastle, England. Hundreds of people watched helplessly as the crew was swept overboard and drowned.

This disaster made the people of England realize that something needed to be done. So a committee was formed and a meeting was held to discuss more modern rescue methods. Many of these methods began on paper, such as plans for the first lifeboat. From there the coast guard eventually became an organized rescue unit.

All of this did not happen overnight, though. It took many years and hundreds of people to work out these procedures.

God's Plan for Rescue

Did you know that a far greater rescue plan is already in operation?

Sometime in eternity past, a meeting was held in heaven with a rescue plan in mind. The committee was made up of the three members of the eternal Trinity:

God the Father

God the Son

God the Holy Spirit

God knew then that the first people created would disobey Him, and that everyone born afterwards would be a sinner and die, just as the shipwrecked would die with no means of rescue.

Omniscient

Romans 5:12

So God decided to provide the way of salvation. He decided that someone who was absolutely perfect and free from sin had to take the sinner's place and be punished for him.

God the Son said, "I will go. I will take the punishment man deserves."

And with that, the plan of grace was confirmed — God would do all the "doing" while undeserving mankind would do all the "receiving."

Salvation would be a gift free for the taking: each person would always have a choice of accepting or rejecting God's grace gift.

God also knew in eternity past that His enemy, Satan, would use his own arrogant ideas to deceive mankind about God's plan of salvation. God knew that Satan would blind man to grace with the lie that you can get to heaven if you do enough good deeds, or if you give up things you enjoy.

So the committee decided that the Holy Spirit would reveal God's rescue plan to the human race. The Holy Spirit is the invisible power that makes us realize that we need a Savior. He helps us understand that without Jesus Christ, we are eternally lost and condemned.

John 16:8

1 John 5:12

Yes, without God's rescue, we share the same fate as Satan—eternal doom in the lake of fire.

Matthew 25:41

Revelation 20:10

Grace In Action

Even though salvation is a free gift for mankind,it cost Jesus Christ a great deal!
What exactly did He have to do to rescue me?
Have you wondered yet about the punishment God the Son agreed to take on our behalf?
He had to pay the price, or penalty, for sin. And that price is spiritual death—total separation from God.
The Son had to die spiritually in our place.

Romans 6:23

To accomplish that, He first had to become a real human being like you and me . . .
. . . except He was miraculously born without a sin nature.
As a true human being, Jesus Christ lived on earth for over thirty years and followed God's plan perfectly.
He never committed even one sin.

Hebrews 10:7

Matthew 26:42

When the time was right, Christ willingly went to the cross. And while hanging there in the worst agony you can imagine, God the Father turned His back on Him.
The Father separated Himself from the Son, poured every sin upon Him, and judged Him as if He had committed those sins. Totally innocent Jesus was judged for every wrong thing every human being has ever done or ever will do.
Jesus Christ's spiritual death—total separation from the Father—caused Him to scream,
"MY GOD,
MY GOD,
HAVE
YOU
WHY
FORSAKEN
ME?"

Matthew 27:46

When He finished bearing our sins, He said, "It is finished,"and then He took His last breath and died physically.
In other words, He voluntarily gave up His own physical lifeonce His work of salvation was complete.

Luke 23:46

John 19:30

The cost for sin was paid by Jesus Christ’s spiritual death, so our sin no longer stands in the way of our relationship with God.The Lord Jesus Christ now stands there instead, ready to receive anyone who accepts His free, grace gift.
The cost for sin was paid by Jesus Christ's spiritual death, so our sin no longer stands in the way of our relationship with God.
Jesus Himself said, "I came that they might have (eternal) life, and might have it abundantly."

John 10:10b

Want to be Rescued?

Imagine for a moment that you are on a ship lost in a violent storm at sea. Even the lifeboat is being tossed around so much that passengers are afraid to jump into it.
The captain of the ship yells out, "You can absolutely trust that lifeboat! It was made so that it is impossible to capsize or sink!"
You and all the other doomed passengers have a critical decision to make, right?
Well, in the same way, God says to the helpless sinner, "You can absolutely trust My plan. Salvation is perfect because salvation was accomplished by a perfect Person.
God is the sovereign Supreme Being of the universe, but He respects man's volition.
He allows anyone who so chooses to remain on Satan's doomed ship.
There is only one choice you can make to be saved—"Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ."

Acts 16:31

There is only one choice you can make to be saved—"Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ."

Acts 16:31

The moment you believe in Christ, He puts you into the unsinkable lifeboat of eternal life.
You are rescued forever.
"Here again is the cross, and Jesus Christ actually died for our sins on that cross. In fact, He died twice. First of all, He died spiritually by bearing our sins. And secondly, He died physcially after the work was completed. Between His spiritual and His physical death, Jesus said 'It is finished.' And when He said that, salvation was completed. Everything necessary for our salvation was provided, and nothing could be added to it." Pastor Thieme, Teens Series, Lesson #27
