The 2009 kiln sheds

The 2009 kiln sheds are being demolished to make room for the new courtyard and parking alongside the Learning and Production Centre. A temporary kiln shed has been built on part of our visitor's car park so production can continue undisturbed. It will be demolished in Autumn 2025. The new courtyard and parking form part of Phase 2 of our development, completing in Summer 2026.

New Production Studio

The new studio on the ground floor of the Learning and Production Centre will allow us to increase the production of our signature Standard Ware pottery and develop our apprenticeship programme.A new kiln shed will house a specially commissioned 3-chambered kiln operating with bio-fuelled technology. The Learning and Production Centre will replace a 1950s cottage used for Learning and residencies. This work forms part of Phase 1 of our development, which will finish in Autumn 2025.

The Production Studio

The workshop that currently houses our studio potters will be repurposed as exhibition and collection galleries, and their studio will be moved to a new bespoke space in the Learning and Production Centre on the former Beagle Cross cottage site. This forms part of Phase 2 of our development beginning in Autumn 2025 and continuing until Summer 2026.

New Entrance and Cafe

Our new entrance to the museum and shop will include a welcome desk and café. The entrance connects the shop to the new temporary exhibition and collection galleries. This forms part of Phase 2 of our development beginning in Autumn 2025 and continuing until Summer 2026.

Restoration of the Old Pottery

Essential repair and restoration of the old pottery buildings, which are at the museum's core, will ensure that Leach Pottery will remain here for the next 100 years. The original part c.1920 is Grade II-listed. Refreshed displays will include stories collected from former potters and the local community. This forms part of Phase 2 of our development beginning in Autumn 2025 and continuing until Summer 2026

2008 Cube Gallery

The Cube Gallery currently hosts exhibitions. It will be redesigned as an archive study room and library and featuring in focus exhibits. This forms part of Phase 2 of our development beginning in Autumn 2025 and continuing until Summer 2026.

2008 entrance building

The current reception will become a Make Space. This is part of the museum where visitors can explore making by handling clay in all its forms and looking closer at finished pots. This forms part of Phase 2 of our development beginning in Autumn 2025 and continuing until Summer 2026.
The Pottery Cottage
The cottage was built in 1920 and currently houses our shop and gallery. We will make vital repairs to this Grade-II listed building, including a new roof, refurbished interiors and improved access. This forms part of Phase 2 of our development beginning in Autumn 2025 and continuing until Summer 2026..

Pottery Cottage upstairs

The top floor of Pottery Cottage will be returned to accommodation for visiting artist and research residents.

Trees

Our aim was to keep as many trees as possible on site. In early May 2024, an ecologist conducted a tree survey and confirmed no nesting birds before we removed two trees. New trees will be planted locally to replace them. Four trees are being relocated offsite, with the apple and fig trees going to our neighbour, St Ives Community Orchard.

New Learning Suite

The new Learning Suite on the upper floor of the fully accessible Learning and Production Centre will allow us to increase the number of specialist classes and workshops we hold for local people and visitors. Beagle Cross, a 1950s cottage, will be replaced with a new building - a fully accessible Learning and Production Centre. This work forms part of Phase I of our development which will finish in Autumn 2025.
