women's right and social changes in the uk

In 1867, the London Society for Women's Suffrage was formed to campaign for women's right to vote, aiming to address the wage gap and promote equality. By 1870, laws changed allowing women to retain their property and earnings after marriage, helping to normalize economic independence for women. Women's rights advanced further when, in 1926, they were allowed to buy property just like men, and by 1928, women finally gained the right to vote. The establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948 was a pivotal moment, providing free healthcare to all citizens and supporting gender equality in health access. The Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 marked a significant stride towards equality by making it illegal to discriminate against women, addressing issues like the glass ceiling in professional settings. By 1982, it became illegal for bars and pubs to refuse service to women, helping to reduce societal stigma and normalize gender equality in social spaces. Noteworthy progress continued into the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 1997, Marjorie Scardino shattered a significant glass ceiling by becoming the first woman CEO of a major company, Pearson. These milestones collectively represent significant steps toward gender equality and the dismantling of long-standing barriers.

  • Do you think everyone has these rights? Why (not)?
  • Why might some people have these rights and other people not have them? Discuss the possible reasons.

Whether men and women are naturally different is a complicated and controversial topic. While some argue that biological differences between the sexes lead to varied skills and behaviors, others believe that social and cultural factors are more influential. In my opinion, gender stereotypes play a significant role in shaping how we perceive and anticipate men and women's conduct. The text provides several pieces of evidence to support this argument. For example, men are more likely to start a business, while women, on average, earn less than men. Additionally, marketing reinforces gender stereotypes by promoting different products and lifestyles for men and women. These factors suggest that social expectations and norms affect gender roles and behaviors. From my personal experience, I have witnessed many instances where gender stereotypes have affected people's actions. Boys are often encouraged to be tough and competitive, while girls are expected to be nurturing and cooperative. These expectations can limit people's opportunities and prevent them from pursuing their true passions and talents In conclusion, although there may be some biological differences between men and women, I believe that social and cultural factors play a more significant role in shaping gender roles and behaviors, Gender stereotypes can have a negative impact on individuals and society by restricting people's choices and abilities. We should strive to eliminate these stereotypes and create a more inclusive and fair society
