Similarities

How has climate change impacted Ireland?

Ireland is a saucer-shaped island in the north Atlantic Ocean characterized by it's daunting coastlines and remarkably green landscapes. Coastal cliffs lead into lower inland areas, meaning that more intense weather caused by climate change leads to flooding and erosion in the inland areas.Irelands average temperature has increased 1.5º F since 1980 and continues to rise today due to greenhouse gases and deforestation. Climate change has caused the endangerment of the Irish Curlew, the beloved bird known for its distinct cry. Humans are also not safe from the effects of climate change, as the Irish environment changes, so too will Irish people because so much of the vibrant culture is rooted in the landscape and natural beauty of Ireland.

How is Ireland combatting climate change?

Ireland has committed to the European Union's Action Plan as well as signed numerous other climate agreements with the United Nations. The European Union has encouraged the Irish government to protect natural bog habitats, with only 1% remaining from cutting turf. Also, excess funding has been allocated to Ireland by the EU in order to help with the transition to a low-carbon economy. Gas emissions in Ireland have decreased by 1.9% since 2022 due to an increase in fuel prices, increased renewable energy, and behavioral change and regulation. Projections show that Ireland will reach 29% reduced emissions by 2030, which is unfortunately below the goal 51%, but still an impressive feat!

Where are there similar effects?

The United kingdom is located about 200 miles east of Ireland and experiences some similar effects of climate change. The UK has also seen a raise in average temperature year round, as well as more frequent severe weather patterns and rainfall. Like Ireland, with no change in environmental habits, the UK is expected to experience warmer, wetter climates and more often severe weather. Globally, the temperature has risen 0.8º C which has had several adverse effects similar to those in Ireland. Overall, the Irish landscape provides many resources for the Irish folk an people around the world, so the changing landscape is dangerous for us all.
