CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACT ONKEY WEST, FL
1. The Florida Keys, as well as several other coastal cities, are constantly under the threat of climate change. Expert climatologists have recorded a gradual rise in sea level, an increase in the severity and the frequency of hurricanes, and a decrease in coral reef health over the past century. The increase of greenhouse gas emissions since the Industrial Revolution has resulted in the surface temperature on both land and in water to increase; thus resulting in many coral reef communities bleached out. From an economic perspective, the lack of coral hurts the tourism industry which Florida heavily relies on for financial income. More people are moving out of the Keys than ever before for the fear that their properties will be wiped out by a natural disaster.
2. To combat the effects of climate change, construction companies have begun to raise roads, install stormwater pumps, raise establishments, and floodproof any buildings threatened by the sea level rise. Raising the elevation that the city is sitting on will only temporailty fix the problem. The flooding and submergence of Key West is inevitable if environmental justice isnt brought soon.

3. Similar to the events occuring in the Florida Keys, the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef have been undergoing severe bleaching within recent years. Providing habitat to roughly 25% percent of aquatic life, the loss of coral reefs affects the oceanic food chain drastically and can cause certain populations of predators to skyrocket. Countries like Australia who heavily rely on the oceans as a source of food should be concerned for their future. Globally, sea level will rise and flood many countries, disrupt farming practicesin certain areas , and financially devestate the global economy.
