The character and personality of Jesus of Nazareth

The Gospel of Mark Unit Project By: Erwin Diaz

Go!

What can the Gospel of Mark tell us about Jesus?

What do the stories tell us about his personality? Let's find out...

Trait #1 - Compassion

Jesus' compassion is repeatedly highlighted throughout Mark. He is seen responding to the needs of the people, healing sicknesses, and addressing spiritual oppression.

“I do will it. Be made clean.” (Mark 1:41)

This portrays compassion clearly when Jesus heals a leper. Moved by compassion, He stretches out His hand, touches him. His compassion motivates His actions, emphasizing His deep care and concern for human suffering.

Trait #2 - Authority

Jesus’ authority is a central theme in Mark’s Gospel. It is evident in His teachings, miracles, and even His confrontations with demonic forces.

"The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes" (Mark 1:22)

In Mark 1:22, the people recognize His teaching as one that comes with authority, and is further demonstrated in Mark 4:39, where Jesus calms the storm with the words:

"Quiet! Be still!" ... "Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?" (Mark 4:39&41)

Trait #3 - Humility

Despite His divine status and authority, Jesus consistently displays humility in His interactions and lifestyle.

"For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as ransom for many" (Mark 10:45)

This statement reflects His self-sacrificial nature and His commitment to serving others rather than being served, which is a cornerstone of His earthly ministry.
