The EU has been a factor of peace, stability and prosperity for more than a century. It is a economic and political union with unique characteristics, made of 27 european countries, with 24 oficial languages, that together cover a large part of the European continent.
Treaty of Rome1957
Creation of the European Economic Community and creation of the european Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or EURATOM)
European Parliament1962
Meet the first time in 1958 in Strasbourg, with 142 deputies. They change the name European Parliamentary Assembly to European Parliament.
The Maastricht Treaty 1992
Amended the previous European treaties and create a European Union based on three pilars :The European Communities; The common foreign and security policy; Coopertaion in the fields of justice and home affairs.
Charter of fundamental rights1997
Create a space of common freedom, security and justice. Some fundamental aspects: -Employment; -Free movement of citizens; -Justice; -Common foreign and security policy; -Institucional reform to face the -Entry of new members.
Treaty of Lisbon2009
Gave new legislative powers to the European Parliament, putting it on an equal footing with the Council of the European Union in the decision-making process on what the EU does.
Brexit2016
Process of the United Kingdom's exit of the European Union that ended on December 31, 2020
