Example

The teacher explains that building compound sentences is the next step up in the scope and sequence from simple sentences. He reviews simple sentence structure and they practice some of this prerequisite skill together so that the teacher can fill any gaps he notices in the students’ understandings. He spends some time explaining why compound sentences are important to reading and writing complex texts. He identifies the key parts of compound sentences, including the new concept of coordinating conjunctions. After explaining how each individual part of the sentence works, he models creating several compound sentences by combining two simple sentences. After modeling how to combine the sentences, the teacher practices the skill with students while they work on the same skill at their seats. The teacher walks around and monitors for accuracy. Once the class has practiced together, the teacher provides opportunities for the students to practice on their own while he gives immediate and corrective feedback.
