Born This Way

The (in)famous meat dress

Raising the "steaks"

monday,05/03/10, nokia teather, la

The dress you see next to this text is the iconic meat dress that Gaga decided to wear during the VMA awards in 2010. This dress is symbolic, as the popstar wore it to bring attention to animal rights as well as gay rights!

How does a meat dress promote gay rights? -> (CLICK ME!)

It was symbolic!

This dress is symbolic. Gaga explained that it symbolized equality among every living being. She wanted to highlight the importance of protecting animals and humans, promoting a message of compassion and inclusion. Note that this was a controversial theme to talk about in 2010, so we can say that Gaga was brave for doing that.

"Now we'll both go!"

Lady gaga kisses a protester

_________________________________

In this iconic clip, a protester tells Gaga that she's going to hell. As a response, the popstar kisses the protester saying "now we'll both go!", as a taunt to the people who say "gay people will go to hell".

Her male alter-ego

Yes, this is still lady gaga.
joe calderone

Lady Gaga's alter ego, Jo Calderone, is a male character that she created in 2010. She created it to challenge traditional gender norms. Calderone allowed Lady Gaga to express herself in a different way and experiment with different styles and personas. Jo is Lady Gaga's way to make a statement about gender fluidity and self-expression

Interview explained

In case you missed something

Next to this text there is the interview in which Gaga explains the message behind the meat dress. And, basically, the message was: "If you're dead meat, you're dead meat. Doesn't matter if you're gay dead or straight dead, you're still dead". Notice she came at the VMAs with 4 men. Those men were soldiers, that lost their job because they were gay. Gaga wanted to make people understand that the sexual orientation doesn't matter, as long as one is ready to die for their country.

HOME

Gaga is an activist who fights brutality against black people.

Socials

  • She is a strong supporter of the BLM (Black Lives Matter). Gaga is one of the few people who LOUDLY speaks about the injustice there is in USA against the black community.

To show support and give visibility to associations supporting black people, Gaga gave them her Instagram account. (Click this text!)

This helped said associations to spread significant messages in support of the black community

Small analysis: Born This Way

There are various points in this song where Lady Gaga encourages listeners to be themselves no matter what:

"I'm beautiful in my way, 'cause God makes no mistakes"

"In the religion of the insicure, I must be myself, respect my youth"

"Don't hide yourself in regret, just love yourself and you're set"

"Don't be a drag, just be a queen, whether you're broke or evergreen, you're black, white, beige, chola descent, you're lebanese, you're orient"

"No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgender life, you're on the right path, baby, you were born to survive"

"Wether life's disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today, 'cause baby you were born this way"
