Who is a child according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child?
Any minor human being (minor = below the age of eighteen)
Why should childreen have 'special'rights?
- They are vulnerable
- They need protection
- They are a distint group with differents needs and rights from adults
Childreen's rights are the Humans' rights of childreen with particular attention to the rights of special protection and care afforded to minors.
Remember! Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings regardless of:
nationality, national or ethnic origins, sex
color, religion, language
Or any other status...
Four major categories of Children's Rights
necessary for the existence of the child
Right to survival
- Right to life and survival.
- basic needs for food
- live with their parents and not be separated from them (unless it's necessary).
- right to healthcare and medical care attainable.
- right to have a name and nationality.
- right to adequate standards of living.
ensure that a child is given all opportunities to develop their potential and evolve into a well-rounded individual
Right to development
Right to:
- access to information and material from different sources and media.
- Development through parental responsability.
- education which aims at developing the child's personality, talents, and abilities.
- enjoy their own culture and pratcice their own religion and language.
- recreation and cultural activities.
guarantees a child is heard and given a voice in any decision-making process that affect them
Right to participation
Right to:
- freedom of expression, receive, and impart information.
- freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
- freedom of association and freedom of peaceful assembly.
- protection of privacy, family, home, or correspondence.
guarantee safety from any dangerous influence or situations
Right to protection
Right to:
- protection from all forms of maltreatment, abuse and neglect.
- State is obligated to provide protection for children without family
- protection of refugee children and children with disabilities.
- protection from Child Labour, Drug abuse, Sexual exploitation, Sale trafficking, abduction, torture, deprivation, arm conflicts or other exploitations.
