Suite à la mort de Staline, Khrouchtchev, le 1er secrétaire du PCUS dit qu’il souhaite « déstaniliser » l’URSS et dénonce les crimes de son prédécesseur. Il dissout également le Kominform, arrête la propagande et émet une volonté de nouer des relations avec l’Ouest.

Suite à la mort de Truman, Eisenhower veut poursuivre la doctrine Truman, il compte pratiquer la politique du roll back c’est à dire qu’il ne faut plus seulement endiguer le communisme, il faut aussi le refouler.

- L’armistice signée en Corée en juillet 1953 et la conférence de Genève en juillet 1954 aboutissant à l’indépendance du Vietnam désarment les crises en Asie améliorant ainsi le climat international - Conférence de Genève en juillet 1955 réunit les dirigeants des 4 grandes puissances Eisenhower et Khrouchtchev s’y rencontrent pour la première fois pour y discuter de l’Allemagne et du désarmement nucléaire. Aucun accord n’est trouvé mais la conférence suscite l’espoir d’une détente durable entre les deux grands.

Khrouchtchev est à l’origine de la notion de « coexistence pacifique » qu’ilaborde dans son discours lors du XXème congrès du PCUS en février 1956.
