Language is learned through the operant conditioning process. This theory states that given certain stimulus children can learn to speak by repeating the sounds they hear around them and that if encouraged, they can develop a successful use of the language.

The theory of cognitive development proposed by Jean Piaget.

This theory states that the children's intellectual development is within them, including the lingusitic development and that learning a language is achieved by our exploration of and physical interaction with our surroundings.

The review of B.F. Skinner's verbal behaviour proposed by Chomsky.

1. Chomsky refuted Skinner's theory stating that learning a language is too complex to be acquired through the operant conditioning process. 2. Instead he proposed his theory of the human universal grammars which states that the human brain is biologically programmed to acquire a language.

The social -cultural theory proposed by Lev Vygotsky.

His theory proposed that social and cultural interaction is key to develop a language.Within this theory, Vigotsky also introduced the notion of “zone of proximal development”. He mainly states that a child cannot acquire a language alone, but through the process of “scaffolding". Via this process a child can move to a higher level of knowledge through the guided interaction of a capable adult.
