A movie by Disney ad Pixar studios. CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN TRANSLATION

LUCA (2021)

Luca is a 2021 Italian animated film directed by Enrico Casarosa and directed by Pixar Animation Studios and co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It narrates the story about Luca, the protagonist,

who lives unforgettable experiences together with his new best friend Alberto. But both hide a secret: they are sea creatures from a world below the surface of the water.

The movie, however, shows differences in translation between the Italian and English projecting. Let's check them out!

We can already see some changes as we go on with the movie, like in the scene where Luca guides his ''grazing fish'', as weird as it may sound, and warns one particular fish who wants to escape, telling him how his friend could be dead or, as he says, ''seeing the world'', which in Italian becomes ''esplorare nuovi mondi''.

In the first part no translation is lost, only a name changes as Giacomo, a fisherman, is called Jacob, then for the rest the names are in Italian. Only some sentences are not translated like "per mille sardine", "non preoccuparti" and "hey bello" in fact they are said in Italian.

Indeed a subtle change, as the only difference is how the sentences convey the emotion of the message, but there are more peculiar changes. One funny change can be found when Luca, to keep his fish at bay, shows them a statue of himself who he calls ''Smuca'', which sounds silly indeed, but morphs into ''Duca'' in the Italian translation, giving the stone clone much more authority with its new name meaning ''Duke'', after the producers played with the phonetic of these words.

Another difference can be found in the scene where Alberto, the second protagonist, shows Luca around his hideout, in which there's a record player, apparently broken, as the boy claims. Luca happens to fix it, so ALberto says ''l'hai aggiustata!'' which should've been translated into ''You fixed it!'' but was changed into ''you unbroke it!'', purposely making him say quite the confusing verb for this occasion.

Earlier we talked about Alberto, the second main protagonist of the film, who happens to be a hothead and has a accidentally rude way to refer to people, which is ''what's wrong with you, stupido?'' which is then translates to something completely different- but still offensive: ''Cos'hai in quel cervello bacato?''

It wouldn't be fun if we only talked about the boys, though, as there is a third star in this masterpiece, Giulia, the third protagonist. She also presents changes in some things she says, such as her classic ''slipped'', when she almost falls on the tree of the hideout in her home, which she offers to Luca and Alberto. It should've been translated as ''scivolata'', since it's originally a verb, but was turned into a noun as ''scivolone'', giving it a much goofier sound.

Other im portant characters are Luca's parents, who appear to say, even if slightly, different things in the two translations.

Facciamo sempre a modo tuo = everything is always on you Adesso tocca a me = I wanna step up (Lorenzo tells his wife that he wants to do something to find Luca) I got this = so quello che faccio (Lorenzo is talking to Daniela) Credevi davvero di riuscire a farla franca? = Did you really think you could get away with this? (He tells this to a child he thought was his son) Non ci ho capito molto = It turns out I don't got this (He says this to Daniela referring to the fact that he had mistaken a child for his son)

La solita tiritera = this is gonna take forever (Giulia says this because Mrs. Marsigliese, who has to explain the rules of the race they are about to sign up for, wastes time introducing herself unnecessarily) Ercole non restituisce niente = Ercole doesn't have to do anything (Ercole says this referring to the money he stole from Giulia) Ne ho abbastanza, sistemiamolo Luca = that's it, come on Luca (Alberto tells this to Luca because Etcole is making fun of them)

Fatti sotto = come and get it (Ercole to Alberto) Gareggi da sola? = Team of one? (Mrs. Marsigliese is asking Giulia)

Giulia's honorable mentions

Our beloved (and poor) Giulia shows a playful translation of the nickname the villain of the story, Ercole, gives her: ''Spiulia'', which is transates as ''Vomitulia'', after she threw up during the Portorosso cup. She also says, in the scene where her dad talks about sea monsters at dinner, says ''everyone in Portorosso believes in sea monsters'', while in the Italian translation she claims it's the press that believes in them.

But wait!

Stay in your seats, as for there aren't only changes in translation, but also things that are exactly the same in both languages, which is a rather common event in this movie. Let's check a few of them.

-''Finito!"= Giulia says it when she finishes Trenette. Then she takes the bike and begin the last part of the race

-''Silenzio Bruno"= Luca apologize to Alberto and tells him "Silenzio Bruno" because Alberto was telling him that Luca would be better off without him

-"Per mille cavoli Guido, faster, più veloce"= Ercole says this to Guido when he sees that Giulia has already left

-''Forza Giulietta"= Giulia's father says it before race starts

-"Ops scusa"= Ercole says this to Giulia in a sarcastic way when, on the climb, he overtakes her

-''Olio di oliva"= Ercole says this as he pours the oil on Ciccio, the child, to make him swim faster

-"Santa Ricotta"= Giulia says it when she sees that Luca goes to save Alberto even though the rain would have transformed him too

-"Trenette"= Giulia says it when she sits down ot the table

-"Mostri Marini"= Giulia's father says it when he sees Luca and Alberto arriving transformed

-''Imbecille"= Ercole says this to Ciccio when he comes out of the water
