Calexico is a city in California near the border, beside the United States and Mexico. It has a small community with different lifestyles ans healthy relationship. Calexico and Mexicali are sister cities with a strong bond and consider themselves like family. Calexico has a distinct apparence with its tall palm tree and are very religious, but also very oriented towards music that is part of their unique identity. A lot of people cross the border everyday either for work and education but also for shopping and entertainment, as of fact, the walmart from Calexico is the 1st in the USA.
Mexicali is a city in Mexico that has a very different culture and different style than Calexico. Those two cities have a very special bond. Indeed even though they have a lot of differencies, they are still linked by their names, showing that two cultures are merged. Young people who lives near the border come to Calexico for education in hope to have a better future, but it is still very difficult for them has they have to get up early in order to arrive in time at school and have to go through the border security. People are waiting in line for hours to be able to go to Calexico.
Since the intervention of the maquiladoras a lot of things have changed. A maquiladoras is a manufacturing plant in Mexico, they grew the economy of the country and created almost a thousand jobs. Since then, a lot of problems has merged: the air has become of poor quality leading to diseases like asthma, allergies or even reactions but since the healthcare is too expensive for the people, it led to their deaths and those of infant. Also, there are environmental issues like pollution but also the transformation of the landscape. Finally it has also greatly impacted the border because people would commute back and forth to go work in the factory, that made the queue become longer at hte border and increased the traffic jam and waiting time that was already long.

Workers from Mexicali often go to cross the border very early in the morning and it still takes a while till they can get in, then wait and work around 2 am since most of them work in the field, so that way it’s less hot.
