A lord gives to his vassal a fiefs (a piece of land) and the capacity to collect tax. In return, he gets military support, advice and vassal's loyalty

FeuDal System

Feudalism is a system of alliances between lords and vassals (both of them nobles).

A vassal could give a part of his fiefs to another noble, so a person could be a lord and a vassal at the same time.Peasants were out this system.

Population in the middle ages

As knights and other nobles hat to spend their time in battle, they allowed peasants to work their lands.This is called "Manor System".

Serfs

Around 90% of the population were peasents with no land. Meanwhile the 10% were nobles.

Manor system

A manor was an agricultural estate that a lord ran and peasants worked. Many free peasants had to become serfs. The serfs had to:

  • provide labor services
  • pay rents
  • be subject to the lord's control.

Distribution in a manor.

Pay rent included:

  • Peasents used the rest of the estate's land to grow foods for themselves.
  • They also had to gave a share or every product they raised.
  • Also paid the use of the manor's common pasturelans, streams, ponds and surrounding woodlands.

Important vocabulary

Manor: Señorio Peasants: Campesinos Serfs: Siervos

Being under lord's control:

  • Serfs could not leave the manor.
  • The serfs were tried under their lord's courts.

Labor services included:

  • Working lord´s land.
  • Building barns and digging ditches.
  • Usually worked three days a week for their lord.
