How do we acquire language?

We all acquire language the same way.

There are some things we all do the same.

Example language lesson

Let the teacher repeat it

The teacher says it and the students repeat it.

None of this things help.

The teacher writes it and the students copy it down.

The teacher deletes certain words and the students try to guess what word it is.

Language acquisition process

One word, tow wordss, gradually getting more complicated.

What counts in speaking is not what you say but what the other person says to you.

Silent period: don't put the focus on the person speaking. During this time, the person takes comprehensible input.

It came quickly.

Factors that relate to success in language acquisition

Motivation: students who are more motivated, do better in language acquisition.

Self-esteem: students with more self-esteem do better in language acquisition.

Anxiety: the lower the anxiety, the better the language acquisition. For language acquisition to really succeed, anxiety should be zero.

Block: effective Filter Hypothesis

L.AD- Our job is to get input into the device.

Input LAD

Low motivation, low self-esteem, high anxiety: the block goes up and the input cannot get in.

Human vs animals

Language separates us from the rest of the animals. Animals do not have a sophisticated language like ours. Despite the complexity of language, babies are capable of learning it.

How is this possible?

Theories about language acquisition

Do we have or do we not have innate ideas?

Plato= we are born knowing things. Locke=the mind is a blank slate on which experience writes.

Chomsky= there are some structures in our brain called Language Acquisition Device (LAD).
