DRAFTING OF A RESEARCH REPORT
By: Carlos Gonzalez Chavez
Step 1
Understand the Assignment and Set a Schedule
- Carefully read and understand the requirements of the research report assignment. Note down the deadline and any specific guidelines provided by your instructor.
- Break down the task into manageable parts and create a schedule or timeline outlining when you will complete each step of the research and writing process. This will help you stay organized and ensure you meet your deadlines.
Step 2
Finding a Topic and Question
- Choose a topic that interests you and aligns with the requirements of the assignment. Consider the scope of the assignment, your own knowledge and expertise, and the availability of relevant resources.
- Once you've selected a topic, refine it into a specific research question or thesis statement that will guide your investigation and analysis. Make sure the question is clear, focused, and capable of being answered through research.
Step 3
Begin Research
- Gather relevant sources of information such as books, academic journals, articles, and reputable websites. Utilize library databases, online search engines, and other research tools to find credible sources.
- Take detailed notes as you read, highlighting key points, quotes, and ideas that will support your argument or analysis. Keep track of the sources you use for proper citation later on.
Step 4
Construct an Outline
- Organize your thoughts and research findings into a logical structure by creating an outline for your research report. Start with a clear introduction that introduces the topic and your research question, followed by the main body paragraphs where you present your arguments and evidence.
- Divide the main body into subsections, each focusing on a specific aspect or point related to your topic. Use headings and subheadings to guide the reader through your report.
- End with a conclusion that summarizes the key findings of your research and reinforces your thesis statement.
Step 5
Write a Draft
- Using your outline as a guide, start writing the first draft of your research report. Focus on getting your ideas down on paper without worrying too much about perfect grammar or word choice at this stage.
- Write clear and concise sentences, providing evidence and examples to support your arguments. Make sure to cite your sources accurately using the appropriate citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago).
- Review and revise your draft as needed to improve clarity, coherence, and overall effectiveness of your writing.
Step 6
Write a Final Draft
- Once you've completed the first draft, set it aside for a while and then come back to it with fresh eyes. Proofread and edit your work carefully, paying attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting errors.
- Make any necessary revisions based on feedback from peers, instructors, or writing tutors. Double-check that your research report meets all the requirements of the assignment and fulfills its intended purpose.
- Finally, format your document according to the specified guidelines and submit your final draft before the deadline.
