Ni Hao! Welcome to Eastern Asia.

Asia is home to some of the world's largest countries. One of them is China, which is located in eastern Asia. Eastern Asia is also home to Mongolia and Taiwan. Mongolia is a landlocked country located just north of China and just south of Russia. Taiwan is an island located east of China on the Tropic of Cancer. Together, this region of the world is vast and diverse, and its climate ranges from tropical to subpolar.

Let's MAP it!

Let's talk about it!
What kinds of landforms/ bodies of water do you observe?
A diverse landscape- Mountains and Plateaus

The Himalayan Mountain range separates China from Nepal and India. It has some of the world's highest mountain peaks — including Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain on the planet. In western China near the Himalayas, there is a large area of elevated land known as the Tibetan Plateau. The plateau is surrounded by mountains and mostly covered with grasslands.

The Gobi Desert

The Gobi is a vast arid desert that stretches across parts of Mongolia and China. The Tibetan Plateau creates a rain shadow in the region, meaning it blocks weather systems that carry rain from reaching the Gobi Desert. The Gobi Desert is a rapidly expanding region that grows by more than a thousand square miles every year. This expansion is caused mostly by human activity, such as draining water supplies, cutting down nearby forests, and overgrazing surrounding grasslands.

Come Sail Away- the Seas of East Asia

The Yellow Sea is located between China and Korea and connects to the Pacific Ocean. It is so named because windstorms deposit sand from the Gobi Desert onto its surface, making the water appear yellowish. The South China Sea is also part of the Pacific Ocean. It is an extremely important trade route. In fact, nearly a third of all the world's shipping trade passes through the South China Sea. It is the second-most used sea passage in the world. Taiwan, an island, is located off the coast of China, south of the Yellow Sea and north of the South China Sea. Its location has made the island a center for sea-based travel for much of its history.

Let's talk about it!
Why is the South China Sea so important?

Plains and Rivers

The North China Plain is the largest plain in China. It covers over 150,000 square miles and was formed primarily by deposits from the Huang He River ( aka Yellow River). The plain is an important area for farming but is also one of the most densely populated regions in the world. China's capital, Beijing, is located on the northeast edge of the plain. The North China Plain is home to two of the largest rivers in China — the Huang He and the Chang Jiang ( aka Yangtze River). The Huang He is the second-longest river in Asia.Another important plain in China is in Manchuria, a northern region that borders Mongolia, Russia, and North Korea. The Manchurian Plain is home to very fertile soil, which is helpful for farming.

Make a connection: the first Chinese civilizations developed near the Huang He and Chiang Jiang rivers. Why? Is this similar or different from other ancient civilizations?
Let's talk about it!
Huang He ( Yellow River) gets its name and color from the yellowish brown silt. When the river floods, it will leave the silt behind, creating extremely fertile land.

Natural Resources

Fishing
Farming

Mongolia does not have ocean access, because its landlocked. Fishing is not an industry here. China and Taiwan have developed large fishing industries. Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean has become a worldwide issue, but its effect on both China and Taiwan has been especially significant.

China and Taiwan both make use of their lands for farming. Some of the most common crops are rice, wheat, potatoes, tea, and soybeans. Because of its high altitudes and limited rainfall, Mongolia has few areas that are suitable for farming. However, it does have some open grasslands that are good for herding animals.
