French revolution
The French Revolution marked the beginning of the Modern Age. The revolution began in 1789 when the French people rebelled against their king, Louis XVI.As a result of the revolution, France became a republic. The central ideas of the French Revolution were liberty, equality and fraternity. These ideas became popular in other countries as well.
Napoleon
Napoleon Bonaparte was a comander during the French revolution. After that he became Emperor of France. He wanted to establish and empire that included other European countries. In Spain Carlos IV was the king, but Godoy was Prime Minister and signed a treaty with Napoleon in which the French were allowed to cross Spain in order to conquer Portugal, but when they were here decided to conquer Spain as well.

On the 2nd of May 1808 there was a revolt in Madrid against the French. This was the beginning of the Spanish War of Independence.The french soon controlled part of Spain. There were two goverments. the French based in Madrid headed by Joseph Bonaparte. The Spanish was based in Cádiz represented by Fernando VIIThe war ended in 1814.

On the 19th of March 1812 the Spanish goverment in Cádiz approved a new constitution.
Fernando VII
Spain finally defeated the French in 1814.As a result Fernando VII returned to power . He abolished the constitution of Cádiz and restored the absolute monarchy
It was influenced by the ideas on the French Revolution and was Spanish first liberal constitution
Isabel ii
Fernando VII died in 1933. He had changed the law so his daughter Isabel could be queen but when he died Isabel was only 3 years old. Until she was 18 her mother Maria Cristina would rule the country.Fernando's brother, Carlos IV wanted the throne and he was supported by the Carlists. Isabel was supported by the Liberals. The first Carlist war started in 1833 and anded with the Liberal victory in 1839.
Amadeo I
In 1868 military group overthrew Isabel II.In 1870 Amadeo I was chosen as king. In 1873 because of numerous problems, Amadeo renounced.
First republic
After amadeo renounced the Fisrt Spanish Repiblic was proclaimed. it only lasted a year because in 1874, a military uprising restored Alfonso XII (Isabel’s son) to the throne
Disaster of '98
At the beginning of the 19th century, Spain controlled most of the Central snd South America, as well as Philipines in Asia. Between 1810 and 1825 most of spanish colonies became independent. in 1898 USA declared war to Spain over the control of Cuba an Puerto Rico. Spain lost the war and lost the control of its last colonies: Cuba, Puerto Rico and Philipines. This was called the "Disaster of '98" and it was the end of the spanish Empire.
Industrial revolution
It began in the UK in the 18th century and it arrived in Spain in the 19th century.The invention of the steam engine allowed the development of trains and other machines. Moreover, new energy sources such as oil and coal (which were used to produce electricity) started to be used; consequently, the textile and metal industries advanced really fast. Small workshops were replaced by factories, agriculture lost importance and, as a result, most citizens moved to the cities.
