In Japan, the term otaku refers to any person with a pronounced interest in popular culture products, in particular entertainment media such as comics, cartoons, video games and their derivative products (figures, models, costumes...)
Absorbed by his activity and supposedly incapable of distinguishing reality from fiction, the otaku is seen as an unproductive and socially maladjusted or even dangerous subject.
