Learning Theories

Behaviorism

Below are three main theories that we have learned about in Week one.

Constructivism

Edward Thorndike was the main theoristbehind behaviorism and was alive from 1874 - 1949. The main characteristics are a focus on memory through stimuli and reponses. Thorndike aslo has three laws - readiness, exersize, and effect. Thorndike believed that connections students make are vital through out their learning process. The type of learning that is connected to behaviorism is based in relationships between the students.

This is the theory that focuses on a description of knowledge and learning. This theory is rooted in the fact that the individual needs to be actively in their learning process. In addtion it also focuses on metacognition. Three theorists that are based in this theory are Vygotsky, Piaget anf Dewey.

Cognitism

Cognitisim's largest theorist is connected to Montesorri and Piaget. These two theorists cover the structure of what learning can look like and the space that the learners are in. Piaget focused on the different stages of growth. Knowing these stages can impact how you can support learners.
