In the 1980s, Kurds in Iraq suffered under Saddam Hussein's oppressive rule. They endured violence, including massacres and chemical attacks, as the regime sought to suppress Kurdish identity and resistance. This period was marked by widespread suffering and struggle for survival under harsh conditions. Objective/Goals: In the 1980s, Kurds in Iraq aimed for autonomy, cultural recognition, and an end to oppression under Saddam Hussein's regime.

The politics of Kurds in Iraq in the 1980s were indeed shaped to a significant extent by political changes after World War II. The emergence of nation-states, nationalist movements, Cold War dynamics, state repression, and international responses all played crucial roles in shaping Kurdish aspirations, strategies, and conflicts within Iraq during this period. for example the war caused division of land causinf the kurds to be extremley dispersed among several different countries. This division led to a struggle for recognition and autonomy within the Iraqi state causing political disputes and setting the course for the cruel events caused but the atrocity.
