the situation paragraph
1. What is the purpose of this paragraph?
Despite its tropical location, many factors allow Bogotá to be relatively safe from disease transmission compared to many other cities in Colombia. Its cold climate, potable water supply, and its sewage system protect the human population from invertebrates that could transmit zika, dengue, chikungunya, roundworms, etc. Nevertheless, many other diseases do not require mosquitoes to be transmitted. There are at least 500,000 pigeons and 20 million rodents in Bogotá. This is a common problem in most big cities around the world since these animals have no natural predators in urban settings, and, instead, there is plenty of food available to them in garbage. This constitutes a public health problem as both pigeons and rats are transmitters of zoonotic diseases. A zoonotic disease is one which can be transmitted from animals to humans. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites or fungi. Humans become infected when they have close contact with these carriers or consume contaminated food.
To provide the general context of the problem
2. Do you see an extended definition?
A zoonotic disease is one which can be transmitted from animals into humans. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites or fungi. Humans become infected when they have close contact with these carriers or consume contaminated food.
the PROBLEM paragraph
Bogotá is full of hotspots for these little vertebrates. Some of them, like the iconic Plaza de Bolívar are visited daily by thousands of people who even feed them. Pigeons also abound in other places such as El Parque de los Periodistas, La Plaza de San Victorino, La Plazoleta del 20 de Julio and El Parque de Lourdes. The localities of the city most affected by rodents are Engativá, Kennedy, Suba, Bosa and Barrios Unidos. Because of that, the residents of the Colombian capital, and even tourists, are constantly exposed to diseases such as leptospirosis, pulmonary syndrome, helminth infections, ectoparasites (fleas, lice, ticks, etc.) and even the fatal rabies. Immediate actions are necessary to eliminate the imminent risk and spread of these dangerous diseases in Bogotá.
3. What is the purpose of this paragraph?
To present the problem and to specify its negative consequences.
4. How is it different from the situation paragraph?
Situation paragraph: The background or the context which generated the problem.Problem paragraph: The problem and its consequences.
the solution paragraph
One way to address the overpopulation of these animals is to use pesticides in a targeted and controlled way. This method would be used exclusively for rodents, while for pigeons, it is suggested to eliminate nests with eggs and make the hatched chicks available to the environmental authorities. In addition, it is essential to develop environmental education campaigns that involve all citizens. The aim of this is to eliminate the habit of providing easy food to rats through garbage, but especially to pigeons; this habit allows them to continue increasing their populations in an uncontrolled way and furthermore, it establishes direct physical contact between humans and animals.
5. What is the purpose of this paragraph?
To present and explain the solution(s) to the specific problem(s)
6. How many solutions are given?
Three solutions:
- Using pesticides for rodents,
- eliminating eggs with nests for pigeons, and
- educating citizens not to give food to animals directly or indirectly.
the evaluation paragraph
7. What is the purpose of this paragraph?
Some drawbacks of the solutions are that it is possible that environmental education campaigns are not well received in all the community, due, for example, to a lack of interest. In addition, there is a systematic problem in the garbage system which is not for biologists to handle, but as long as it is not controlled, it will continue promoting the proliferation of animals that transmit zoonotic diseases.
To critically evaluate potential difficulties with the solutions
8. How is this "Evaluation" paragraph different from a “Conclusion” paragraph?
A conclusions paragraph is typically a summary of the main points made in the text.
9. How does this "Evaluation" enhance the overall Problem-Solution essay?
It shows that you have thought critically and carefully about the implications or effectiveness of your solutions.
