Child soldiers are minors, often around 7 years old, who are recruited by armed groups to serve as combatans, spies, messengers, or in support roles. They are coerced, abducted, or manipulated, into joining armed conflicts, where they face unimaginable horrors, including violence, exploitation, and trauma

WHERE IS THIS FENOMENON PRESENT
The phenomenon of children soldiers is present in various parts of the world, with cases docuemented in regions affected by armed conflicts and politically instability. Some of the most affected areas include sub-saharan african countries but also in the middle east and asiatic south east. According to unicef in 2021 it was estimated that over 19000 children were recluted as soldiers

HOW DID THEY GET IN THIS SITUATION?
Children and teens are recruited as soldiers for various reasons, including the social and economic vulnerabilty of their families, lack of educational and employment oppurtunities, and the presence of armed conflicts and political instabillity in their communities. In many situations, children may be forced or manipulated into joining armed groups through threats abduction or coercion. Others may be drawn by the promise of food protection or eleveted social status. Additionally terrorists may view children as more easily manipulated and less likely to rebel compared to adults.

what international laws say about it
Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: This statute classifies the recruitment, enlistment and use of child soldiers under the age of 15 as war crimes, and the enlistment of children between the ages of 15 and 18 as serious crimes under the statute of the International Criminal Court.
Optional Protocol on the Participation of Children in Armed Conflict: This protocol, also added to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, establishes the minimum age for voluntary military recruitment and prohibits compulsory recruitment of children under the age of 18.
Convention on the Rights of the Child: This convention, adopted in 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly, establishes the fundamental rights of children and prohibits the recruitment and use of children as soldiers.
