Gandalf, known temporarily as the Grey and later the White, dispatched to Middle-earth in the Third Age to combat the threat of Sauron. He joined Thorin II Oakenshield and his company to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug, helped form the Fellowship of the Ring to destroy the One Ring, and led the Free Peoples in the final campaign of the War of the Ring.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was English, but he was born in South Africa in 1892. Both his parents died when he was a boy, so John went to li!e with an aunt in England. After he left school, he went to Oxford Uni!ersity and studied English. Then he got a job as a teacher at the uni!ersity.Tolkien had four children and he often told them stories. They really enjoyed one story. It started: "in a hole in the ground li!ed a hobbit..." This story became Tolkien's first book,The Hobbit. He later wrote The Lord of the Rings. Both books were fantastically popular, especially in the USA. Tolkien beca(e rich and famous, but he hated being well known. Tolkien created an imaginary world called "Middle Earth" for his stories. He in!ented special languages for Middle Earth, and he could speak and write these languages. He died in 1973. Thirty years later, the New Zealand film director Peter Jackson made three films of The Lord of the Rings. They were big hits all over the world.

Éomer Éadig was a Man of Rohan and the eventual eighteenth King of Rohan, and first of the Third Line of their Kings. In the last decade of the Third Age, Éomer was the Third Marshal of the Mark.

You can stay in the next box even if you give a wrong answer!

Legolas was a Sindar Elf who joined the Fellowship of the Ring in the Third Age. Son of the Elvenking Thranduil of Mirkwood, Legolas was Mirkwood's prince, a messenger, and a master archer. With his keen eyesight, sensitive hearing, and excellent bowmanship, Legolas was valuable to the Fellowship in their journey across Middle-earth. He was well-known for becoming friends with the Dwarf Gimli, despite their long-held differences.

Was the younger son of Tar-Amandil, the third King of Númenor. He had a son, Caliondo, who in turn had a son, Malantur. Malantur was apparently a possible heir to Tar-Aldarion, his cousin, but the law was changed such that Aldarion's daughter Ancalimë would be the heir.

Gollum, originally named Sméagol, was a Stoor, one of the three early Hobbit-types in the Third Age. By possessing the One Ring, his life extended centuries beyond his nature, and he became deformed and twisted in body and mind by the corruption of the Ring. He pursued the Ring for many years after Bilbo Baggins found it in Gollum's cave, within the Misty Mountains, and took it away. The name Gollum was derived from the sound of his gurgling, choking cough.

Aragorn II, son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, also known as Strider and Elessar, was the 16th and last Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North; later crowned King Elessar Telcontar (March 1, 2931 - FO 120), the 26th King of Arnor, 35th King of Gondor and first High King of Gondor and Arnor since the short reign of Isildur. He was a great ranger and warrior, and bore, as Isildur's heir, the shards of Narsil, reforged and renamed Andúril ("Flame of the West") in the War of the Ring.
