Look at this sentence!!

Spiderman was created by the writer Stan Lee in 1962.

Uses of the passive voice

1- When we don't know the agent:

2- When the agent is irrelevant:
      • An experimental solar power plant will be built in Almeria.

Comparing active and passive sentences

Active sentence

Passive sentence

  • When we use a passive verb, we say what happens to the subject
  • If we know who did the action, we use the agent.
    • If we don’t know, we don’t mention the agent.
  • When we use an active verb, we say what the subject does
  • We don’t have the agent, but we have the subject that did the action

From active to passive in 4 steps!!!

FIND the object in the ACTIVE sentence:

      • Stan Lee created Spiderman in 1962

This OBJECT will become the SUBJECT of the PASSIVE sentence:

      • Spiderman....

Use the verb BE + PAST PARTICIPLE to add the verb. Respect the tenses!!

      • Spiderman was created...

The SUBJECT of the ACTIVE sentence becomes the AGENT:

      • Spiderman was created BY Stan Lee
