Who is Albert Bandura?
Canadian-born American psychologist and originator of social cognitive theory who is probably best known for his modeling study on aggression, referred to as the “Bobo doll” experiment. Bandura became fascinated with the subject and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in 1949, and a master's degree in psychology in 1951 and a doctorate in clinical psychology in 1952 from the University of Iowa.
What is the Social Learning Theory?
Social learning is a theory of learning process social behavior which proposes that new behaviors can be acquired by observing and imitating others. SLT is often described as the ‘bridge’ between traditional learning theory (behaviorism) and the cognitive approach. This is because it focuses on how mental (cognitive) factors are involved in learning.
What are the Mediational Processes?
1. Attention
2. Retention
Bandura highlighted the retention process in limitation, where individuals symbolically store a model's behavior in their minds. For successful imitation, observers must save these behaviors in symbolic forms, actively organizing them into easily recalled templates.
Model catches observer's interest. individual needs to pay attentionn to behavior and its consequences and form a mental behabior worth imitating. Attentional processes are crucial because mere exposure to a model doesn't ensure thats observers will pay attention
3. Motor Reproduction
4. Motivation
This is the ability to perform the behavior that the model has just demonstrated. We see much behavior daily that we would like to be able to imitate, but this is not always possible. Our physical ability limits us, so even if we wish to reproduce the behavior, we sometimes cannot.d
The perceived favorable or unfavorable consequences of mimicking the model's actions that are likely to increase or decrease the liklihood of imitation. The will to perform the behavior. The observer will consider the rewards and punishments that follow a behavior. percieved awards outweigh the percieved costs, the observer will more than likely imitate the behavior.
Investigate specific examples where Bandura's social learning theory has been applied successfully in educational settings, discussing the outcomes and implications for learning.
Teachers often use Bandura's social learning theory when teaching kids to be respectful and cooperative in the classroom so that it is easier for kids to learn in the classroom. Teachers will often times give examples of these things so kids know what to do and what not to do. Another example would be someone tutorting another person or a peer helping them with something in class and be rolemodels. For example at Lincoln in 1st grade everyone would have a "buddy" who was in 5th grade who would help them with reading and homework.
Explore Bandura's contributions to understanding aggression and violence in the media, discussing the implications for societal attitudes and behaviors.
Albert Bandura gave us an understanding on violence and aggresion in the media by doing research on the bobo doll experiment which observed the aggressive behavior in the media and shows how it can influence people's behavior and attitude. Bandura thought that media violence leads to aggression for young children. Parents, Peers, and other adults play a role in making sure that children are not exposed to harmful media.
Reflect on the enduring legacy of Albert Bandura in the field of psychology, discussing the continued relevance of his theories and their implications for contemporary research and practice.
Robert Bandura's legacy is one of great success and forward movement in the space of social science. His successes in social science have earned him a Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in Social science. The “Bobo Doll” experiment was his most recognized contribution to science. Most of his scientific achievement is linked to this experiment. This is because it was the first experiment to successfully illustrate how aggression and other behaviors can be learned via exposure. His research allowed psychologists to further understand behaviors and the root of why people act how they do. This has affected millions of people because it is part of how therapists understand their clients.
Investigate the application of Bandura's social learning theory in the context of online platforms and digital media, exploring how observational learning occurs in virtual environments
Robert Bandura’s ideas in the “Bobo Doll” experiment are as apparent today as ever. Social media and mass media have proven his ideas right. The idea that we replicate behaviors that we see stands true. This is shown via TikTok trends, where everyone sees one person dance a certain way and begins to replicate that dance and post it themselves. It is also seen in fashion trends perpetuated by social media. For example “wife beater” shirts were repopularized by content creators and they can be seen everywhere throughout Owatonna. The connection that modern technology offers makes Bandura's “Bobo Doll” experiment extremely relevant over 60 years later.

Highschool student who watches and observes the game of soccer to better undertand and learn the rules and skills you need to be able to be on the team.
if a person encounters new information regarding their career field their ability to retain the new information should be high. However, if a person encounters information about a field that is totally new to them, retention of the new material is not as likely.
90-year-old lady who struggles to walk while watching dancing on ice. she may appreciate that the skill is desirable, but she will not attempt to imitate it because she physically cannot do it.
A dad saying he will give his son a piece of candy if they do their homework or a dad saying he will take away the kids toy if the kid doesn't do their homework. these are both examples of motivating someone to do something.
