These accomplishments demonstrate the tangible impact of HCCF and the collective efforts of our community. With total revenue surpassing $3.5 million, we were able to make impactful grants to support a diverse range of charitable initiatives, projects, and programs. Our endowed investments reached $20.7 million in total assets, further solidifying our financial foundation. Undoubtedly, one of the most exciting developments of the year was the launch of our fundraising campaign, “Stronger Together: Building a Better Community.” This initiative aims to raise $1.5 million for unrestricted endowment funds, supported by a generous $3 million grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. With a remarkable $2 to $1 match, the campaign has the potential to generate a total impact of $4.5 million, amplifying our ability to address critical community needs.

As we reflect on the remarkable year that was 2023, we are thrilled to share the significant impact and achievements of HCCF – made possible by our many generous donors and supporters. Throughout the year, we demonstrated our commitment to community leadership, donor service, and collaborative partnerships with local nonprofits and government entities. Our efforts have resulted in effective grantmaking of over $1.6 million and a host of other accomplishments that underscore the potential of HCCF to effect positive change. In 2023, we embarked on that demonstrate our dedication to enhancing the lives of those who live, work and play in Hendricks County:

We conducted a comprehensive review of our scholarship process, focusing on the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Our updated program now encompasses a balanced assessment of various factors including academic performance, extracurricular activities, financial need, and unique circumstances affecting students’ lives.In collaboration with Leadership Hendricks County, we hosted the Lead with Purpose Board Training Series, that engaged 72 community leaders over a span of four months to enhance their leadership skills and civic engagement. Through a collaborative effort with the Hendricks County Commissioners and Council, we facilitated the distribution of over $564,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to 24 deserving nonprofits through a competitive grant process.

Chris and Amber started their Family Legacy Fund at HCCF because they knew it was a lasting way to give back to the organizations and causes they care about right here where they live. This fund also provided an avenue to model for their children their deeply held values of generosity and local philanthropy.

THEIR STORY

A strong, close-knit family and community has always been a core value to Chris and Amber Tincher. They adopted one-year-old twin girls from China in 2006, and then their son was born two years later. They moved their young family to Hendricks County in 2009 because they wanted a family-friendly community with great schools. Chris is the owner- operator of two Chick-fil-As in Avon, and both he and Amber volunteer and financially support local nonprofits. Looking back now many years later, they know they made the right decision to move to this county—they love this community and want to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to them by giving back locally.

RECIPIENTS

HCCF partnered with the Hendricks County Commissioners and Council to assist with the distribution of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to nonprofits working in Hendricks County. In 2022 HCCF designed a grant application process to distribute up to $6.6 million of these funds, $5.5 million of which was allocated in the same year. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed by Congress and signed by President Biden to speed up the country’s recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing recession. The funding Hendricks County received is part of the $350 billion to help state, local, and tribal governments bridge budget shortfalls and mitigate the fiscal shock of the pandemic. The second year of ARPA grant applications closed in July 2023 and the HCCF Program Committee recommended competitive grants of approximately $564,000 for 24 community organizations that help make Hendricks County a great place to live, work and play. The Community Foundation is honored and excited to continue collaborating with our county officials on this important work. Because of these grants, local nonprofits serving our community will be able to continue to meet the needs of our community, despite the long-term financial setbacks created by the pandemic.

Hendricks County Senior Services is incredibly grateful to our county's elected officials and to the Community Foundation for its investment. We are excited to share that funds from the ARPA grant will be dedicated to significant improvements in the Senior Center's fire suppression system, ensuring the Center can continue to provide on-site activities for aging adults. HCSS appreciates the generous support from our community and welcomes all Hendricks County seniors to its Center.

Jerry Vornholt, The Republican Publisher

The Republican Newspaper has been serving Hendricks County since 1847. Since then, there have been 8,738 consecutive weekly issues published! Jerry Vornholt has only owned the publication for a few years but loves the opportunity to serve his community with reliable, local news. The Republican and the Community Foundation have partnered together for many years, so when an issue of community unity and knowledge was identified in HCCF’s Community Needs Assessment, Jerry had an idea. One of the top five needs identified in both the 2019 and the 2022 assessment was that community leaders lack overall community knowledge. As a newspaperman, Jerry had a solution in mind. He approached the Community Foundation with the idea of gifting a newspaper subscription to the elected officials in the county. HCCF recognized the value of providing this resource and invested $5,000 to provide subscriptions for a full year to every public official. This grant is a testament to HCCF’s commitment to building Community Unity and trust in leadership as a means to break down barriers and take a critical step toward solving needs in our community.

It's hard to measure the impact that this grant will have on the Hendricks County community. The more I witness how a local newspaper brings a community together, the more I realize the power it has. Our elected officals need to understand what's going on in this county and what they say and do is being read by their constituents.

Hendricks County Interfaith Council

In 2023, the DEI Committee started its work reviewing Community Foundation programs by partnering with the Lilly Scholarship Committee to redesign the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Changes included adding financial need, a more expansive definition of community service, and considering unique circumstances applicants had to overcome while still being high achieving students. HCCF also completed a Nonprofit Census to update our records, add new organizations to our database, better understand the demographics of organizations serving Hendricks County, and expand our reach to all the nonprofits in our community. 113 Hendricks County nonprofits responded to the survey. We found that many Hendricks County nonprofit boards lack representation from Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Asian, Hispanic or Latinx communities, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community. We are continuing our community outreach in Hendricks County with the launch of the Hendricks County Interfaith Council. The goal is to bring together faith leaders across various faith traditions to make a positive impact on our community. Monthly meetings are designed to create a space where faith leaders can discuss, without judgment, challenges in their congregations, build a strong network of faith leaders, and learn from leaders about issues that may impact their communities.

WANT TO LEARN MORE?

In the effort to increase HCCF board and staff understanding of our DEI priorities, we dedicated a large portion of our 2023 board retreat to learning about how DEI impacts the work of the Community Foundation. Staff highlighted those concepts that impact each area of our work. Community leader and DEI specialist Bridget Collins-George also provided a training on “Conditioned in Culture.” These efforts help us build trust among the spectrum of people who call Hendricks County home. They are essential to our efforts to make Hendricks County a more inclusive place to live, work, and play.

Since 1998, the Community Foundation has been proud to partner with Lilly Endowment Inc. to offer the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Over the last 26 years, HCCF has awarded 74 Lilly Scholarships to students from Hendricks County. This scholarship provides full tuition to an accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in Indiana and a yearly stipend for required books and equipment. Hendricks County Lilly Scholars are awarded this prestigious scholarship based on significant community service, outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills. Congratulations to our three 2023 Lilly Scholars: Emma Cremeans of Avon High School, Katherine Langford of Avon High School, and Mariah Richardson of Cascade High School. Our scholars toured one of HCCF’s recent grantees, Meals on Wheels of Hendricks County, and learned firsthand the value our local nonprofits add to our community. The scholars prepared and delivered meals to seniors in our community - thanks for your service, scholars!
