What is the Social Learning Theory?

The Social Learning Theory, created by Albert Bandura, is all about how we learn from the people around us. Our social behavior is created based on what behaviors we see around us. Bandura's Bobo Doll Experiment tested, and proved, this theory. It is made up of four parts, as listed on the next slide. EX: When someone grows up in a unstable house hold, their household is more likely to be unstable when they grow up. EX: If crime is big is someones family, they themselves are more likely to commit crimes. EX: If a shampoo company is promoting a product, they should show people using that product.

What are the Mediational Processes?

2 : Retention

1 : Attention

We have to pay attention to the things surrounding us so that we interpret and understand behaviors. EX: you need to listen to the teacher's lesson because you won't remember the material for the test

This is how we store the information we processed in the last step. EX: you need to remember the information the teacher taught you in class

4 : Motivation

3 : Motor Reproduction

Putting the skills and behavior that you learned from the last two steps into action.EX: studying for the test on the material/ taking a test on the material/ doing your assigned homework.

The feeling of wanting to complete something for a goal or purpose. EX: studying the material for school because you want to get good grades.

Investigate specific examples where Bandura's social learning theory has been applied successfully in educational settings, discussing the outcomes and implications for learning.

An example of where Bandura's Social Learning Theory has been applied successfully in educational settings is in the CNA class and Foundations in Emergency Care class here at the high school. Student first learn about what they are going to be doing, then they memorize the steps, then they actively practice the skills. This makes them better prepared for an actual emergency, instead of just knowing. Students get to build that muscle memory and it will help their behavior and thinking in a real situation. Overall, the outcomes of learning like this produces students that are able to react to different situations with a calm demenor because we were trained with the muscle memory as well as the knowledge.

Explore Bandura's contributions to understanding aggression and violence in the media, discussing the implications for societal attitudes and behaviors

Bandura's Social Learning Theory explains so much about our society that we live in today. There is so much violence that all stems from the media. Because we are all seeing the violence, we take in that information and our behavior starts to shift toward those impulses. Because we now understand how people are learning these behaviors, we can now better combat all the violence and aggression by reducing the amount we see in the media. Unfortunately, I don't see this happening in the coming years. Some implications of violence and aggression in the media are that we now start to see it more widespread. People have access to the media wherever they are and this leads to the emergence of more violence. It is a neverending cycle that is going to be very hard to slow down or stop, especially in the modern era.

Investigate the application of Bandura's social learning theory in the context of online platforms and digital media, exploring how observational learning occurs in virtual enviroments.

It is scary how widespread social media is. Bandura's Social Learning Theory explains a lot about the type of environment that surrounds social media. If one person is mean on there it will spiral out of control. We are learning based on what is on the internet and what we see others doing on there. Tiktok is a big platform the really shows the Social Learning Theory really well. We have trends that go viral on the site, which become widespread, and eventually everyone knows about them and is doing them. We learn based on what others are doing, and we follow those behaviors. Cyberbullying works the same way. One person is mean to another, more people see this and start doing it, and everything becomes all out of control, with everyone being mean and thinking they are protected behind their screens. These scenarios fit the Social Learning Theory perfectly.

Reflect on the enduring legacy of Albert Bandura in the field of psychoogy, discussing the continued relevance of his theories and their implications for contemporary research and practice.

Albert Bandura will forever leave an impression on Psychology and the study of learning as a whole. We now know how people pick up behaviors and learn social cues. Bandura's theories will continue to be relevant to the field of psychology forever because these principles are the very foundation of how we, as humans, learn and evolve as a species. We now are able to understand what is going on in our world in a better light because we understand how humans create their behavior. We know why things go viral, why violence and aggression seem so prominent in our society, and why every seems so similar in their behaviors. These things, which we thought might be preprogramed into our DNA, are taught. Albert Bandura's legacy in the field of psychology will live on forever because of how influential his theories were.
