TRINITY ISE II (B2): LISTENING & SPEAKING

THE RULES: DOs & don'ts

DOS: You must ...

  • arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time
  • bring your ID card
  • bring your appointment slip
  • bring relevant material (topic form, photos, objects, etc.)

DON'TS: You are NOT allowed to

  • use mobile phones or smartwatches
  • use dictionaries or written scripts
  • eat or drink (bottled water is OK)
  • smoke
  • record your exam
  • take pets
  • carry dangerous objects (or replicas)

topic task

  • Prepare a presentation
  • Use the topic form (as an outline)
  • You’re allowed to take relevant material (e.g. photos, objects, etc.)
  • Try to ask some questions
  • Be prepared to answer questions

The questions may require you to:
  • highlight the pros/ cons of your topic
  • discuss counterarguments
  • speculate about what might happen
  • describe actions
  • etc.

collaborative TASK

The examiner will read a prompt about a topic (see examples on the next page). You are responsible for keeping the conversation going.

In this task you may have to ...
  • initiate and maintain the conversation
  • express opinions (In my opinion, /From my point of view,/ As I see it, / I personally believe that ...)
  • talk about advantages (One of the benefits of/One of the pros of/ The main advantage of ... is that ...) and disadvantages (One of the drawbacks of/One of the cons of/ The main disadvantage of ... is that ...)
  • speculate (It/You may/ might/ could ...)
  • agree (I could not agree more/ You’re right) and disagree (I’m afraid I can’t agree with you/ You might be right but ...)

CONVERSATION TASK

You’ll have a short conversation with the examiner about a topic. The language functions you’ll need for this task are the same you’ve used for the previous ones (agreeing, disagreeing, expressing opinions, etc.)

Some of the possible options are:
  • society and living standards (= social issues)
  • personal values and ideals
  • the world of work
  • environmental issues
  • public figures

GRADE: 0-16 There are four different criteria that the examiner will take into account. Your mark in each of them will range from 0 (= incorrect or not attempted) to 4 (highly skilled in this area)

independent listening TASK

You will listen to a recording twice.

1st time (listening for global meaning):
  • You are NOT allowed to take notes.
  • You will be asked to explain what the speaker talked about in one or two sentences.
  • To answer the examiner’s question, you can use expressions such as the following ones:
(If I understood him/her/it correctly, ...)The speaker talked about ...The recording is about ...The speaker explained ... (video: 11:44")

2nd time (listening for more specific ideas):
  • The question(s) you will be asked will vary depending on the listening activity you got.
  • In this part taking notes is OK.
