La Unión
La Unión has a population of around 20,900 inhabitants. Its name is due to the union, in 1868, of two small cites , el Garbanzal "the Chickpea field" ,where the food for the miners was produced and Herrerías, or The Blacksmith, where this job was done. La Union is also known as the city of mining and flamenco.

Our history dates back to Roman times when slaves worked as miners in mountains like ''Cabezo Rajao''. During the Middle Ages, mining would almost disappear, but after centuries in oblivion, mining in Murcia started again in the mid-nineteenth century, surpassing even the old Roman splendor. The main exploitations were located in our Sierra Minera, taking advantage of the lead, zinc and iron mines.

Such activities left a landscape full of ‘’castilletes’’, a metallic structure in the shape of a tower, wells and mining furnaces.

In an extension similar to about 18,000 soccer fields, there were up to 1,200 active small mines simultaneously. This reflects the prosperity of La Unión, called “the new California” Such activities left a landscape full of ‘’castilletes’’, a metallic structure in the shape of a tower, wells and mining furnaces. The mining activity was the economic, social and cultural pillar of the society until 1991, when the mining activity totally ended. Then, our city suffered a very strong economical crisis with a very high unemployment rate.

AGRUPA VICENTA MINE Then, a group of people realized that something had to be done to recover all those abandoned mining elements, so that they could be useful again from a touristic point of view and also to restore and preserve our cultural heritage. Being restored and opened to the public in 2010, It is one of the biggest visitable mines in Europe. Together with the Mining Park, it offered an important tourist attraction in the area. Unfortunately, it was closed during the pandemic in 2020 but we know our government is working hard for it to be open again very soon.

“Festival Internacional del cante de las minas” It is an International Mining song and flamenco contest which is celebrated in August every year in La Unión since 1961. This type of songs was born from the fusion between the primitive songs brought by the Andalusian miners and the autochthonous songs of the Sierra Minera of Cartagena-La Unión. They started in the singing cafes of the time, frequently visited by miners after their long working hours in the depth of the mine.
