What is a community school
A community school is both a set of partnerships between the education system, the nonprofit sector, and local government agencies.
Integrated student supports
Expanded and enriched learning time
Active family and community engagement
Collaborative leadership practices

Offers support for mental and physical health, nutritional guidance, assistance with housing needs, and other wraparound services
Expanded and enriched learning time
Includes lengthening the school day and year, as well as enriching the curriculum through real-world learning opportunities.

Includes not only providing services but also involving parents and community members in decision-making processes and activities that contribute to the overall well-being and success of the students

Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School: Provides comprehensive health services (including a specialized teen clinic) through a partnership with the Children’s Aid Society Bronx Family Center.
Oakland International High School: Supports newcomer students who have recently immigrated to the California Bay Area by providing free legal representation, after-school tutoring, English classes for parents, mental health and mentoring services, and after-school/weekend soccer programming.
what policy makers and educators can do
Pass resolutions in support of community schools at the local level and establish- oversight committees that involve students, families, educators, and community partners.
Enact local policies that support well-designed community schools that incorporate the 4 evidence-based pillars: integrated student supports, expanded learning time, community partnerships, and collaborate practices
Develop resource guides and technical assistance centers to provide support, professional development, coaching, and partnership development for district and school staff.
Provide funding, training, and guidance to regional leaders to support and expand community school efforts.
