For some come of their own accord, without any human compulsion, and they themselves come to the fields and the rivers widely spread, as soft reeds and supple broom, poplars and willows with their gray-green foliage sing.

Virgil compares the vine with the poplar, both very common in his time, highlighting how the latter plant (unlike the former) does not require special care for its growth.

According to the myth, Phaethon (the son of the Sun), unable to control the solar chariot, was struck by lightning by Jupiter and fell into the river Eridanus (often identified with the Po River). His sisters, the Heliades, who had helped him harness the horses, mourned him for days on the riverbanks until Jupiter, moved by pity, transformed them into poplar trees, shedding tears of amber. Even today, it is common to see numerous rows of poplar trees along the course of rivers and in marshy areas.

Virgil's contemporaries used this tree to preserve fruit during the winter by covering it with poplar sawdust, as the bark and buds contain substances with antiseptic properties. In Roman times, it was also believed that the poplar had medicinal properties; it was indeed used in the preparation of herbal teas to treat fevers, and its buds were utilized to treat burns.

Today, since it's a fast-growing tree with high efficiency in converting solar energy into biomass, the poplar is cultivated to obtain wood for plywood, packaging crates, and matches (as it's a poor fuel that burns slowly), and especially to produce pulp for the paper industry.

We have gentle apples, soft chestnuts, and an abundance of pressed milk; and now the far-off roofs of the villages are smoking, and larger shadows fall from the high mountains.

The chestnuts were nicknamed by the Latins as the "acorns of Jupiter" because the large and mighty trunk and the leafy branches of this "cosmic tree" evoked Zeus, the supreme god of Olympus.

The ancient Romans made a significant contribution to the spread of the chestnut tree, appreciating both its fruits and its wood. The wood's hardness made it suitable for structural works.

Virgil tells that chestnuts, along with milk and cheese, have been a fundamental element of the human diet for centuries. The chestnut tree is also mentioned in Book II of the Georgics, where it is described as a common and well-cultivated fruit tree, even before the birth of Christ.

Today, much of the chestnut production comes from the foothill areas and is destined for both fresh and dried product markets. It is particularly used in livestock feed, especially for swine, whose meat acquires superior characteristics when fed with chestnuts, and in the confectionery industry.

In the midst, an ancient elm spreads its shady branches, vast; commonly it's said that Dreams hold their empty seat there, and cling beneath all its leaves.

The elm had many uses in ancient medicine: it was believed to be useful for all kinds of skin ailments, burns, and even in the treatment of leprosy, thanks to the properties of the inner fibers of the bark.

The elm was also used as a support for grapevines: the tree was pollarded to allow more sunlight to reach the grapes growing around the trunk.

Virgil in this passage from the Aeneid describes a huge elm tree guarding the underworld, as such a tree was considered by the Greeks as the tree of Oneiros, the son of Night and the god of dreams: hence the tree of sleep, of dreams, and ultimately, of death. As a consequence, the elm had oracle power, that is, the ability to predict important events.

Elm wood, of good quality, is easily workable and resistant to water; therefore, it is used for making furniture, doors, floors, and plywood. It is not a good fuel.

The Romans believed that this tree kept bats, considered birds of ill omen, away, and that its flower, taken with wine, served as an antidote against snake venom.

This plant is also present in the myth of Hercules, who tells of how he killed a monster (the Lernaean Hydra, the second of his Twelve Labors) right beneath a plane tree. In Greek mythology, it is told that the plane tree was chosen by Zeus to celebrate his marriage to Hera; the philosopher Socrates imparted his lessons beneath a plane tree.

In the passage cited by Virgil, the plane tree serves the role of providing shade to a drinker. The plane tree, with its broad canopy, can provide ample shade, and precisely because of this characteristic, it was cultivated first by the Greeks and then by the Romans.

The plane tree is currently one of the most common trees in parks and along city avenues. Its shiny leaves stay clean thanks to the rain, and furthermore, the tree regularly sheds its bark. Its wood is used for making furniture and plywood; it also finds use as firewood.
