Ercolano fu il primo dei siti vesuviani ad essere riscoperto nel 1709 quando lo scavo di un pozzò si aprì su di un teatro. Ben presto statue, colonne, iscrizioni e bronzi furono portati in superficie scavando dei tunnel attraverso la cenere indurita. Gli scavi su vasta scala iniziarono nel 1738 sotto gli auspici di Carlo di Borbone, re di Napoli, e l'11 dicembre dello stesso anno venne alla luce un'iscrizione che recita ''Theatrum Herculanensi'': la città romana di Ercolano era stata riscoperta. Successive gallerie portatono al ritrovamento di ulteriori parti della città interrata, e nella parte nord gli scavi giunsero di fronte alla sontuosa Villa dei Papiri, una delle case private più vaste e belle di tutta l'antichità. Nella villa furono rinvenuti circa 1800 rotoli assieme a 90 sculture in bronzo e marmo che possono essere osservate al Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. Scavi amatoriali furono portati avanti ad intermittenza fino al 1875, ma concentrati solo sul recupero di artefatti di valore ed antichità. Gli scavi sistematici ricominciarono nel 1927 quando delle squadre supervisionate da Amedeo Maiuri (1886-1963), uno degli archeoligi italiani di preminenza, riuscirono a dissotterrare un quarto dell'originale area della città.
Ercolano è, insieme a Pompei, uno dei siti archeologici più belli al mondo, densi di storia e leggende che il tempo sembra aver fermato per sempre. Così come la città vicina, anche Ercolano fu distrutta dall’eruzione del Vesuvio, il 25 agosto del 79 d.C. oltre ad essere colpita, tempo prima, da un forte maremoto, capace di ricoprire la città di fango e detriti rendendola come una pietra, offrendo ai posteri un luogo ricco di fascino.

La città di Ercolano, chiamata così in onore del dio Ercole ebbe il suo periodo di maggior splendore durante l’età della Repubblica romana, quando divenne meta di villeggiatura dei patrizi e non solo. La città però fu distrutta due volte, la prima con il maremoto del 63 d.C e successivamente con la famosa eruzione del Vesuvio che con una nube tossica annientò il popolo, sotterrato da 16 metri di lava che siggillò il tutto come in una fotografia.
La città fu riscoperta anni dopo, nel 1709, durante gli scavi di un pozzo per volere di Emanuele Maurizio di Lorena, e successivamente i lavori ripresero con Carlo III di Borbone.
Gli scavi più importanti, ma in modo poco assiduo, si ebbero dal 1755 al 1792, anno in cui furono interrotti fino al 1927, per poi riprendere in modo sistematico.

Ercolano fu trasformata in una città puramente romana e prosperò come un tranquillo, solitario resort in riva al mare per facoltosi e distinti cittadini romani che vi costruirono residenze sul lungomare con vista panoramica.
