Accessiblity & Usability Checklist

The following checklist is supported by federal, state, system, institutional and UTRGV policies and standards to meet accessibility and usability best practices.

Text Clarity:

  • Ensure that the text is clear and easy to read. Avoid using overly fancy or complicated fonts.
  • Use a font size of at least 12pt or 14pt for a body text.

Contrast and Color:

  • Check that there is enough contrast between text and background colors.
  • Avoid using color as the sole means of conveying important information.

Tabular Text and Text Images:

  • Ensure that tabular information and its data is preserved for any presentation format (visual or auditory).
  • Present text as text rather than using an image.

Images and Alternative Text (Alt-Text):

  • Add descriptive alt-text to images for those who cannot see them to provide context or a functional purpose.
  • Add a long descriptive alt-text to complex images to explain the essential information conveyed.
  • If an image is decorative, add a null (““) as an alt-text to your image.

Video and Multimedia:

  • Provide accurate, clear, and readable captions for pre-recorded and live videos to assist those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Any overlayed text within media should have sufficient contrast to the background.
  • Use descriptive titles and transcripts for multimedia content.
  • Ensure recorded media with instructions demonstrating actions is explicit and thorough.
  • Auto-playing audio should turn off within 3 seconds, or controls to turn off audio be provided to the user.
  • Avoid using any content flashing (3) three times (1) one second.

Headings and Structure:

  • Use a descriptive title for web pages or PDFs.
  • Organize content with clear headings and subheadings, with the use of heading styles in a logical order (H1, H2, H3, etc.).
  • The reading order of content follows the sequential order designed visually and operated by the keyboard. Make sure navigation can be easily done using a keyboard.

Links and Navigation:

  • Ensure that hyperlinks have clear and descriptive text. Avoid using "click here" or similar generic link text.
  • Provide an opportunity for users to navigate sites in more than one manner such as links, table of contents, site map or search feature. Make sure navigation can be easily done using a keyboard.
