His childhood

Roald Dahl was born on September 13th, 1916 in Llandaff, Wales. He had a difficult childhood as his father and older sister died when he was three. His mother raised him as well as three sisters and two step-sisters. He liked to read adventure stories as a kid. His mom would tell him all sorts of fantasy stories, which he loved (as much as chocolate). Roald didn't like school much, so when he turned 18 he decided not to go to university. Then World War II started when he was 23 and he joined the Royal Air Force. He was a pilot during the war.

His adulthood

During this time, he met and married actress Patricia Neal. They lived in Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire, England. He wrote many of his famous stories there. Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal had five children: Olivia, Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy. Roald Dahl started telling his fantastical stories to his children at bedtime. He realised how much his own children enjoyed his stories and decided to write them down for all children to enjoy. ‘James and the Giant Peach’ was the first children’s book that he published, although he had already published ‘The Gremlins’, his first book. He used to write in a small hut at the bottom of his garden and he always used a pencil and yellow paper for his work. He wrote more than twenty children's classic like "Mathilda", "Charlie and the chocolate factorie" or "The Big Friendly Giant"..., and he wrote adult books too.
